Hi

I have been a lurker for a while and decided to register to ask for some help

After searching for a suitable horse since June I was just wondering what you thought of my search criteria and if you thought it is unrealistic, or where I might source this horse.

I am looking for a 15hh (would consider looking at 14.3!) - 16hh, first horse. I am nervous on a new horse and would like a horse that needs a bit of leg/ waking up to get him/her going. I don't really want a particularly fast horse, but it must be able to compete up to 1metre Unaff. SJ sensibly. I want a 100% reliable and safe horse to hack and I compete about once a month and have a lesson a month.

Also, are there many horses that you can leave Mon-Fri and get on them on Sat and they will be the same as last time you rode them? I have found an increasing number of horses that I have tried where that wouldn't work with them!

Looking up to £7500, any ideas?? Is this horse out there?? THANKS xx

Aw sounds like mine I'm afraid but he is not for sale...

I paid £3000 for him 3 years ago, but we had serious teething problems and it took me a couple of years to get him sorted. But with the right help you will find one...
Good luck!

You have a very healthy budget for what you are looking for, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding one. Re the leaving them mon-fri, I dont know many horses that this would work with, especially if you intend to compete. Where will you keep your new horse, it might be worth looking at livery in a riding school environment as most of them offer working livery and is usually a fair bit cheaper than other livery types, they get to use your horse for RS purposes and you get access on whatever days you agree on. It is something worth considering because it would keep your horse fit enough to compete without you having to be there everyday to exercise.

You will be easily be able to find something for that kind of money!

You do have a tough search there, horses that need a lot of getting after and are dead quiet safe novice rides don't generally compete at 1m level. There are quiet horses that can sit in a field during the week and come out at the weekend, but you will need to make sure you find a yard with proper winter turnout as lack of daily exercise at all is not acceptable and will turn the sanest horse into a nutter in a lot of cases. You will not be making it very fair on the horse too if you want to compete at 1m level on a horse that only does a small amount of work as it will not be fit enough and will be more likely to break down. Even a quiet horse, once you get it fit for the class you want to compete in, is likely to be a lot hotter to ride than when it is pootling about being a quiet hack only.

Your perfect horse is out there.

Something safe and not fizzy and that can't be in exercised for a few days with out being hyper is going to be a native type.
Also how about full or part livery with exercise?
This would keep your horse fit for competition.

You will not be able to easily find something, as this paragon of virtue rarely comes on to the market. Sound, 100% safe horses of that size with no quirks who also have enough about them to compete are like hens teeth!

Clip clop traders always get good reviews on here.

I agree with this. I would always start with word of mouth or a reputable dealer, who would let you trial the horse for a month. Good luck!

Might be worth looking at the Fresian breed, I can't speak highly enough of them. The few that I have ridden were the sanist horses I have ever met and felt completely safe on them and felt happy for my niece to ride and handle them. They also make very good alrounders and could be suitable for what you are looking for.
(warning though once youve met one you fall in love with them)

I've got a green 7yo who would turn into that sort, he's only £900 so with your budget you could spend out on having him made into wat you want by somebody :p

I have one of these so yes they exist. Mine hasn't competed up to a metre because I haven't had the transport but he jumps much more at home and has plenty of scope. He's a well bred sausage with brothers/sisters out doing Novice BE etc. You could keep him in for a month and get on him and he'd be no different. I seriously considered taking him hunting today for his first ever time after he's had two weeks off but I decided I couldn't be bothered to plait him :p He'd have been fine. It's impossible to razz him up, he just does everything in his own sweet rhythm love his heart.

He's a bit of a knob on the ground sometimes though which lets him down a bit but otherwise he is exactly what you want. He's the bay one in my siggy. The right one will turn up eventually :) If you're still looking in a couple of months let me know as I plan to sell him (I think) once Nitty is up and running. At the moment I need him as he's my only rideable horse!

Yes he does exist! You have exactly described my daughters horse. He has the added bonus of being very good looking (shown at a high level). Sadly for you he is not for sale at the moment but he is proof that they do exist. She competes him at BE 90 and sj him to 1m. He is irish bred and the most laid back character.

Where abouts in the country are you and how far are you prepared to travel? I got my superstar from Annabelle's Equestrian. They have a small handful of horses for sale at the moment and there are a couple who sound just what you are looking for. They helped me sort out my problem horse as well as selling me my current horse.

They are honest and will tell you if they think you and their horses are compatible or not. Check out their website and read the feedback their clients have left.

Don't be put off by her spelling she is no Shakespeare but you will struggle to meet a more knowledgeable family where horses are concerned!

Hi thank you for all the replies, it's good to know they are out there!

Sorry, I should have gone into more detail as to what I meant about leaving the horse all week. I was only thinking with the dark evenings after work I would like a horse that would be ok to be left Mon-Fri when it is too wet to ride, and it would be fine for me to hack out at the weekend. I certainly wouldn't expect it to go out show jumping after not being ridden all week, the 1 metre show jumping would be when I was riding in the week etc and the horse was fit in the spring/ summer! Sorry !

In my opinion, the best place for you to look is riding schools. Their horses are safe and quite often ploddy types. Schools quite often retire their horses after a few years although they are still perfectly fine to become a happy hacker etc :) Your budget seems brilliant and with that amount, you should be able to find the perfect one! Fingers crossed you find your soulmate!

Not necessarily. Riding school horse are often well behaved cos they're kept on top of. They work hard, live with their mates and have a routine. Take them out of this environment and watch the monster emerge!
