Quick Q - my 4 year old jumped in with my 6 year old yesterday morning and this was the result on the 6 year old's stifle - cue withdraw from WH class tomorrow at big agricultural show and one sore horse. He's not lame, just looks a tad sore. But i'm wondering whether this looks like a bite or a kick - it's approx 3ins long. Am treating with Comfrey cream and cold hosing.

What do you think?

Thats a kick!!! Def!

My last horse had markings just like that from the other mare in her field one day and its too deep for a bite! And i witnessed the horse lash out at her before, so i would say kick :-)

I would say it's a kick and pretty nasty, that's going to be really sore....I would be very careful and if it were me I would put horse on antibiotics just to be on the safe side, as it's easy to forget that the stifle is a joint and if bad bacteria gets in there you could have a real problem.

We had a gelding with almost exactly the same wound maybe a bit bigger and as soon as our vet saw it he put him on antibiotics.
