I went to view a horse today who i have completley fallen in love with, he is a coloured cob x thoroughbred, 2yr old who is exceptionally underweight and looking very sorry for himself but i can see through all that that given time to mature, and put weight on he will be a cracking little horse, he has a lovely head and the kindest eye and absolutley adored my kids and was very gentle. He is standing at around or just under 14h and just turned 2 so i am hoping he should make around 15.2????
However he has a noticeable lump just infront of the area where his willy comes out, not actually on the sheath but just infront, he is gelded but i am worried what the lump could be. A few friends have said it could be a hernia or possibly a cancerous lump> Has anyone experienced anything like this before? It is fairly large, like a handful size and a firm squidgy, its not bony at all. He is only advertised at £400 and is passported, microchipped and wormed and has the potential to be a lovely horse if this lump isnt anything worrying, what would you do?

Sounds like a hernia. Don't know much about them but someone on the Forum will! Think they are quite common and don't usually need surgery. But are you sure a 2 year old will grow another 6 or 7 inches? If it's essential you need him to be 15.2hh, then take advice from an expert. I'm not convinced a poorly cared for 14hh, 2 year old will make 15.2hh.

I agree it sounds like a hernia.

But if you are really keen on this youngster, then obviously it's something for the vet to have a close look at when it's vetted.

It may grow another hand, but then again, it may not - especially if it's not been fed properly and well as a youngster.

Agree that it could be a hernia, but one of my horses gets swellings in that area that are caused by a reaction to midge bites, so could be something like that.

I'd also be surprised if he made 15.2hh. My WBxTB was 16hh as a 2yo and is only just scraping 17hh now as a 4yo.

It is most likely an umbilical hernia. Very common in foals and youngsters. If the muscle wall is open underneath (this can normally be felt), then he may require a minor operation to repair it. If not, it is totally harmless.

Agree with it being a possible hernia. You may find that with proper feeding and care his personality may change a lot. I've seen this happen many times and sometimes it's not always into a nice one, hopefully though you wont encounter that!
