Ok so i have moved my boy to a yard for a month as he has dropped weight since the winter as i just have no grass at all.
He has his own field of an acre with friends either side in their own fields, so they are able to groom each other etc.
So after seeing to him today ie- riding grooming and feeding i was stood watching him and telling him how handsome he is as you do, he went over to the mare nextdoor a very pwetty girlie in fact and they started to groom each other which is lovely, but then his,:eek: ahem :eek:came out and was rather erect to say the least! he wasn't snorting and he didn't seem excited in any other way apart from that :eek:, Is this normal?
I have no idea as he is kept with mini shets at home and he certainly doesn't do this when he is grooming them, they are mares too!
Please tell me he is not a rig? :confused:

No it doesn't mean he's a rig. I've caught both of my geldings "in the act" so to speak and they are definitely not rigs. Randy yes, rigs no.
 
My friends horse gets 'one' when she brushes his legs so I wouldnt be too worried. I think the only way you would know for sure would be a blood test or sommat :)
 
Herbie is Riggy. He wasn't gelded till he was 7 and he still thinks he was a stallion. He is very amoruos around mares and even mounts them if they are in season. He is one randy little bugger. I have nown other geldings who do what you describe but i wouldn't describe them as riggy at all.
I wouldn't worry if he wasn't excited in anyother way as i said and others have also said lots of geldings let it all hang out once in a while. :p ;) :D :D :D
 
I own a rig and your horse is def not one, my boy will mount any mare that comes near him, will scream like a stallion and prance round like an idiot. If a mare is in season he has and will jumped over or broken through fences to get to them, he only behaves when hes ridden :-) thankfully haha
 
A certain proportion of sexual behaviour is learned behaviour (in all species), so a lot of geldings will retain some stallion-like behaviours even though they have no remaining testicular tissue and no testosterone. This can range from simply sniffing urine of a mare in season to actually mounting and penetrating. These behaviours are likely to be more marked in horses that were gelded later as they have had more time to become established.

Just because a gelding displays interest in mares does not necessarily mean he is a rig.

Have you had him blood tested. I have two who behave like this, both late cut and neither is a rig.
 
Yes he is blood tested, missing tissue or possibly full testicle take a very invavsive procedure to find and he's 11 so no point :-)
 
my tb is very very randy!! he gets an erection prances around and roars like a stallion but isnt a rig, hes always calling for his b1tches haha!! hes an ex racer and they tend to keep them entire just incase they are any good (winners) he was cut at around 5 years old, i think it affects horses in different ways, hes always randy but quiet as a mouse and perfect manners etc. hes 12 now and isnt any different!
