Does this seem a bit strange?

One of my ponies had to go to my vet's last Monday (19/03)as she was ill & needed to go on a drip. Sadly she didn't make it

.

I have paid my bill and thought that it was all sorted, however, today I received an invoice for emergency livery. This hasn't come from my vet,but their "landlord". (From what I understand they rent a barn from this woman and it contains 6 stables, offices, operating theatre etc) and she also runs a livery yard from other buildings on the farm.
I don't object to paying this amount (£20 + £3 VAT) but I assumed that it would have been included in the vet's bill.(I don't have the itemised invoice yet as they are going to send it with my completed insurance claim form)
A few things concern me:
1) my details have been passed on to a third party
2) she is charging VAT,but there is no number on the invoice (although I don't know if you have to state it)
3) I had no warning this was coming. It arrived in a plain envelope,I am fairly OK with the death of my pony, but I can imagine that for some people it would upset them further.

I am just surprised because I would have thought the vet would charge their client and then reimburse the landlord?

Vets shouldn't be giving your details out to a third party without your knowledge, you are entitiled to the persons VAT number to check they are VAT registered, the vet should have made you aware of this when your horse went in and I would get your itemised invoice from the vets and double check what you have already paid for! IMO.

Firstly, very sorry about the loss of your pony

I am certainly no expert on this sort of thing, but it seems to me that your contract was with the vets, not their "landlord". You have no legal contract (which requires both an offer and an acceptance of that offer) with them and should therefore not have to pay them anything. I guess for the small amount involved it will be simply best all round if you pay up, but if I were you I would definitely bring it up with the vet. Seems very unprofessional to do things this way imo.

I knew she was likely to be there for a few days and I vaguely remember being something about livery on the form I filled in on arrival. Livery is stretching the term slightly because we arrived about 5pm Monday and Cally was PTS around 9pm the same night.

I'm definately talking to the vet about it! Like you say,it's a small amount and I will pay it as it isn't worth hassling over.

I'd ask your vet too

Plus on the sad accountant front: you need an VAT number, date, address, registered company number if not a sole trader and full description of service.

very sorry to hear bout your sad loss.
anyone can register for vat whether they are a sole trader or ltd/plc company.there is obviously a said amount of turnover when its compulsory it was about £55k a year but you must produce your vat registration number at all times on any invoices etc
the vat national advisory service are on 08450109000

So sorry about your pony, you sound as if you are handling it well. Despite this unexpected reminder! I would contact the practice manager and get them to explain their procedure to you. Sounds a bit strange to me.
