The vet is out next week, but just curious in the meantime!
My mare suddenly started coughing when being ridden in the morning after a little (unsoaked) hay was given to her. This stopped when I told the person who had been riding her to hose the hay down or soak it - she then said it stopped (never coughed with me, so coukd have been skmething else perhaps).
I now soak her hay after continuing to see white discharge from her nose - but im finding it difficult to see a consistency with what causes it. sometimes discharge will appear whe she has just had her dinner before getting turn out and no hay. (although - Could that be coming out her nose because her head is down perhaps).
Also after exercise I have noticed it - but she is not lazy or struggling when ridden which I see is a symptom. Nor have I ever heard any wheezing, and she does not take ages to get her breath back. However when I rode yesterday and today, for most of the ride her breathing sounded odd - sort of how someone would sound if they needed to blow their nose. Today about 5/10 minutes after being ridden, discharge dripped off her nose - its never been runny before, just a 'gloop'.
I thought it may possibly be her bedding - but she was only n her stable about 20 mins before riding today. Although I did put down a new lot of shavings last night. I previousky havent seen a link with bedding. Could be wrong, though!
Sorry its a long one, just wondering if it sounds like mild COPD or something else?
