as title really my farrier charges £10 for refitting a shoe thats come off or if they have lost the shoe he will replace for same price. my y/o is talking about getting a new farrier as shes not happy with paying this. i love my farrier hes been fantastic and it was me who got him to do y/o's horses (i moved from old yard a year ago and brought him with me)hes been doing my horse for nearly 3 years now. she text me today asking if i could get him to come refit her horses shoe and would i bring the horse in for farrier (i always bring the horses in for farrier) i said yes thats fine but its £10 for refit to which i got a reply of thinking we should get new farrier as they dont usually charge for refits. i DONT want a new farrier as my boy took bloody ages to get used to him and dont want to be unsettling him.

but i also really like my y/o shes fantastic. so bit stuck in middle lol. anyway back to original question does your farrier charge for refits/replacing lost shoe? x

If the horse looses a shoe within a couple of days - no charge. After that yes, and it's significantly more than £10.00

I certainly wouldn't change farriers on the basis you describe. However, your YO is free to do what she wants......

If my horse loses a shoe after a few days, yep its free and farrier comes ASAP to put it back on although another farrier that comes to the yard charges £12 even if it happens the very next day!

No if my horse pulled a shoe I would never pay.
My previous horse was a nightmare for pulling shoes. One would be off within 3 weeks. My husband eventually asked if I was having an affair with the farrier as he always seemed to be on the farm :)
I have however offered to pay for replacing shoes.

Same as Amymay. Mine would only charge if shoe was lost a week or so later and he had to come out of his way. If he was passing, he'd pop it back on for nothing, unless I'd lost the orginal shoe.

Time and fuel cost money, so fair enough to charge for this. Good farriers are worth their weight in gold, so certainly wouldn't be going elsewhere for the charge of a tenner.

never thought to say the shoes have been on for about 2 weeks and her horse is a frigging nightmare with keeping shoes on. in the 3 years that my farrier has been doing my horse hes only ever pulled one shoe off so cant complain. i dont mind my y/o changing farriers im just hoping she doesnt get mardy about me keeping him on x

My boy lost a shoe the other week , on the foot where unfortunately he has a crack and as i was stuck at work , my farrier brought his girlfriend to get my horse out of his field and down to the farmyard , replaced the shoe and popped him back out ...they are in love with my horse but even so , he works so hard to keep this crack in check that i guess he thought it was probably in his interest to get it back on asap - he hasn't charged me but i will give them extra when they come again..

If the horse loses a shoe within a few days (sorry can't remember exact definition of "few" but think 2 or 3 days) my farrier does not charge as he accepts he is to blame for not putting the shoe on right in the first place. Any longer than this and, yes, he does charge but I am fine with that. He is charging for his travelling and professional service. He does his best to get to me quickly too so I have no reason to complain, infact I am really happy with my farrier and I keep him happy with a cup of tea!!

If the she is lost inside a week then he will come back and refit free of charge. After that he charges £20 for coming out to refit a shoe.

This is what ours do.

I'd also keep him if I was happy and let YO do what she wants. Why would there be an issue. Do what's best for you and your horse, not a third party whom it doesn't affect!

im just a worrier lol i dont think she would be bothered if i kept him on im just such a worry wart im always thinking of things people would get mardy with me over lol x

My horse pulled a couple of shoes off out hunting last season, I paid £10 to have them put back on (that's with me finding the shoes so just refitting, not having to pay for a new shoe too) and he does it when he's at the yard over the road. Am lucky that he's always at the yard over the road on a Monday so they've always been put back on quickly. If I hadn't got the shoe then I'd expect to pay more than £10 as you need to factor in the new shoe, too.

Different matter if the shoe comes off the day after the farrier has put them on as I'd be inclined to question how well they'd been put on in the first place!

I'm lucky my farrier doesnt charge for putting shoes back on no matter when she loses them (straight after new set or just before she is due).

However I always offer to pay and he just laughs and says 'dont worry she's still under warranty.

However your yard owner could swap farriers but surely you can keep yours with him?

well i have been using my farrier for nearly 2 years now and i wouldnt know if he charged or not...as (touch wood) none of my 3 have lost/pulled a shoe since he started doing them...and even if he did i wouldnt change as all their feet look fantastic now !! If your happy with your farrier and he does a good job keep him :)

Mine doesn't charge for a lost shoe, and he's never charged when she's had and absess to come out remove shoe dig it out then come back out to put shoe back on, but he's very anti vets digging them out as he says they make a compete mess of it. But he is one of the more expensive farrier's in the area and one of the best. All the other farrier's do charge for lost shoes but are much cheaper

Nope didn't charge for replacing shoes any time between fits. Even if can't find shoe. Did feel bad on the 4th visit between being shod on my crumbly TB (same shoe every time! ahhh) and slip him a bottle of wine and a £20 though :D

my farrier is excellent he doesnt charge to replace a lost shoe i dont have refits though and he is so reliable i actually didnt move yard rtecently because he didnt cover that area sad really but used him for years

I don't pay for shoes to be replaced. Not sure about if need a new shoe as usually manage to find the shoe or have used a spare. Always offer to pay but get told no it is free :)

One of mine only charges £5 for fuel.....the other £20 every time they lose a shoe.....the reason i have them both is because the first one gets on fab with the lami and the other with the tb and have done wonders for there hooves.....but saying that farrier one is £5 more expensive for a full set :P

Mine doesn't charge for a lost shoe as long as she is wearing over-reach boots in the field. Even if I can't find the lost shoe he will happily make another one and replace it free of charge. The only time I have to pay is if he comes out on a weekend but that is very rare unless she needs it urgently replacing. I love my farrier for not charging me for replacing them hehe :D

My previous farrier didn't charge at all, but wasn't as good in general.

Current farrier doesn't charge if its only been on up to 10 days, and usually charges £10 after that - with or without the shoe. I always give him a box of our hens eggs when he comes, and sometimes if he pops back to put a shoe back on and I ask him what I owe he just says "Call it a box of eggs!".

my new farrier doesn't charge but he is too nice for his own good! would charge £10 for a new shoe.

my old farrier would charge for anything and everything, but was happy to pay it as he was coming out of his way to do the shoe, so its more than fair to cover his diesel!

i wouldnt have changed farriers if my original one hadn't moved away! if you're happy with who you have stick with him, i rather pay more and know i was getting a good job! i defo think you pay for what you get!

thank you all soooo much for your replies. i think £10 for a refit/replace shoe is ver reasonable imho and im happy to pay it think she just being tight lol. but im definately NOT changing farriers. i replied to text and said im happy for her to change farriers but ill stick with him as hes been fab with my boy she replied saying thats fine dont expect you to change if your happy with him see this is why i love my y/o lol.

shes lovely but im just such a worrier hate the thought of upsetting people for no reason lol xx

At the end of the day, he's running a business, and needs to charge for fuel and time, so I don't begrudge paying. Plus my farrier lives 50 miles away, so its a long haul for just one shoe.
