I have two geldings one is a Chestnut Welsh D x Hackney and the other a Bay TB .....

I was always given the impression that the 'Red Head' Chestnut would be the more firey one ..... although he has never been seen in 17 years to lose his temper .....

However the Bay, who I have had for 8 years, does and shows this by going out into the field and grunts loudly and then pings and flies around legs everywhere and then chucks himself on the ground and the up again and so on .... now you may think that this is being 'normal' ..... but believe me it is a real temper tantrum ..... it normally lasts for 10 minutes

My chestnut mare has tantrums, she will not put up with anyone she deems a novice rider, and as far as she's concerned it seems, anyone who cant sit her buck is a novice rider.lol. Once you've come off, you're cannon fodder.

I've never ridden any other horse thats had tantrums, so cant comment on the colour issue.

I have a bay gelding, don't think he's ever lost his temper.

He gets stroppy when ridden if you ask for something new or something difficult. Then he'll stomp his feet, then try to tank off. But in all honesty I but that down the the breed. Welsh D!!!

Ha ha ... but my old chap is a Welsh D x and he has never lost his temper .... although I must admit that he always was (in his youth!) a stroppy little g*t .... so I see where you are coming from

my horse (in sig) threw a strop the other day when i wouldnt let him go see his new friends the donkeys on our hack. he tried to nap back!
tongue.gif
it was very funny
laugh.gif
as he then "sulked" for the next couple of miles then got back into his hack walk again
tongue.gif

he can get grumpy though in the mornings if his usual routine is changed for one reason or another. nothing nasty, i can just sense his change in mood
tongue.gif
its not noticeable though to anyone else
wink.gif

Mine doesn't grump but his brain melts if he gets very stressed. He is chestnut, but I think it has more to do with him being TB.

MYfriend has his half sister who is by the same stallion X ID mare and she has the same brain melt moments, to it might be daddy (she is chestnut too)

My mare in my sig will throw huge tantrums, and when she does it, it is all a test to see what the riders reaction is. Usually (but not 100%) if you tell her off quickly she may try for a short while longer but it will end, whereas if you aren't quick to correct her it will get worse until you are sat on the floor. Having said all of this, she hasn't thrown a big one in a long time (I hope its because she's worked out its just not worth the energy) recently its been little ones over a done in a blink, and about 75% of the time she is a angel!

I know irishlads chestnut ID is a stroppy bugger if asked to work when he doesn't want to. He's been known to stamp his feet and glare at everyone
tongue.gif

Ellie on the other hand is a Section D chestnut mare and is rather ladylike lol. if she's not happy about something - like not leading a hack - she walks along with her ears at half mast but as soon as she's back at the front her ears go forward and she is much more forward going. Tempermental?
shocked.gif
Whatever gave you that idea?
wink.gif

My TBx can be mare-ish at times - she'll just suddenly throw her toys out teh pram and have a tantrum whereas my chestnut mare is a little darling

I've got a chesnut ID gelding who's normally the kindest, sweetest horse you could wish for but if something really angers him he loses his temper to a degree that has to be seen to be believed. He has no regard for his own safety or anyone around him, his sole focus is dealing with whatever has annoyed him so badly. Luckily this happens very very rarely. Other horses obviously read something in him though because if he starts giving "the look" or moving in a particular way most of them decide they want to be somewhere else doing something totally inoffensive!

Paddy never looses his temper or moves faster than 5 mph lol - my friends call him stoner pony and are convinced there is a certain substance growing in his field. Haha!

Yes insofar as my TB I can see exactly where you are coming from .... my old boy will not get ANYWHERE near him if TB is about to lose it ...... so if you watch my old boy's body language then you know what mood the TB is in .... it is really strange

My mare, Star, can be incredibly marish in the field when in season

- but she is NEVER any different to ride

Scrooge, grey (going white) 7yr old brabant/bolounaise has tantrums on a regular basis. Unfortuantly its whenever he doesn't understand something which is fairly regularly... he becomes unreasonable so he's hit a bit of a wall, he's doesn't understand, lashes out, his adrenaline gets up and theres no way you'll get through to him until he is removed from the situation....

I have a chestnut NF mare & although she doesn't have temper tantrums she will test you to the max. If she has someone new on her back & they're riding her in a field say, then she will bolt to the gate & needs a firm hand to get her working. This isn't bad manners as she once she knows she can't get away with it she is fine.

She will try & nap towards friends or home if she senses she hasn't got an equally strong willed rider on board.

& if you need to tell her off while on the ground (I can count on one hand how many times I've had to do that in 10/11 years) she will be mortified & then sulk with you for 10 minutes.

She doesn't have tantrums but she is very strong willed & will try your wits when riding her

Frankie is a bay Welsh D and his loss of temper and strops have to be seen to be believed!
grin.gif

Thankfully he doesn't put his weight or muscle into anything (very) harmful but he will stop and paw the ground, fence or stable door regardless of if you are on him or not,
blush.gif
if not allowed to follow his friends at 100mph and then given a loose rein to catch up he will strop, stomp and prance without moving forward an inch like he's being held back by the cruellest of bits,
blush.gif
and will buck (the most comfortable bucks) if I am being a fool (i.e. last witnessed when I got my double reins mixed up and rode him off the curb!)
blush.gif

He loses concentration and plays merry hell with every evasion in the book and quite a few that were never in the book if I take my concentration off him to answer a phone call or text.

My coloured ISH mare is extremely hot headed (think its the chestnut in her!) and will often throw a temper tantrum if she doesn't want to do something or go a certain way, however I've found this fairly easy to deal with as I am equally as stubborn and make sure she always does what I'm asking eventually. It can turn into a battle of wills but I can always tell when she's just playing up to when she's genuinely upset about something and make sure I deal with it accordingly.

my 2 bays one wb and one ish lose their tempers sometimes.the ish was really bad from 4yrs to 16yrs old.lol.
thje coloured is very mellow not seen her have a temper tantrum.would be waste of grazing time!

My chestnut mare doesnt really lose her temper but she does sometimes get cross when schooling if I am asking her for a bit more! She will swish her tail and put her ears back etc but tbf I do try to listen as she is one who generally likes to please and will work hard. I take it as her saying I am trying my hardest mum! So I tend to work her through the grumpiness and then back off to something easier.

Despite being chestnut she is one of the kindest horses you could meet.

Onur little black and white cob can have a real strop, even at 27. The last time she was ridden she got left behind a bit and jumped up and down with sister on, as if saying, if you'd get off I could catch up'! And when she was introduced to the new mare the volume of the swearing could be heard for miles! 16:3 ID backed off as 14:3 hairy person went through the gate at full volume.

My 3 yr old is going through a phase of temper tantrums at the moment. They will usually involve throwing herself to the ground in the field (always near the fence for maximum dramatics
wink.gif
) if you take something out (she doesn't even need to like it). Yesterdays tantrum was over the measuring stick (too scary to even contemplate
grin.gif
) and also one coming in from the field when she decided the starlings on the telephone lines were invading her personal space - rearing was of course the natural way to scare them off.......

I hope she grows up soon

My chestnut mare doesn't have tantrums if you ask her to work harder, she loves hard work the more difficult the better!

When jumping however, she has to do it her way. She knows exactly what she's doing, how to get the strides right etc etc and if you mess her about she will let you know she's not happy by bronking. I went through a very short phase of panicking in front of the jump and pulling her out of it, when I ended up halfway up her neck afterwards it soon taught me not to do it!

I think it is more breed related, my Chestnut TB ex racer was a honey. never ever had a tantrum or lost his temper. My bay Welsh D x TB is another matter altogether! He will literally throw himself on the ground in disgust when he tantrums, which is often unless I try to avoid it. Interestingly most grey geldings I come across seem to be quite laid back, even the racers.

the 5 yr old chestnut mare only tends to throw tantrums when she gets frustrated or doesn't understand when she is schooling, other than that she is the sweetest

the 15yr old bay gelding has the ability to throw a temper tantrum at any point. He threw one last night in his stable and managed to pelt his face which then led to another strop because his face hurt!!

My 33 year old can literally turn purple with rage. He was rearing at the gate last night because I stopped off on the way to feeding him to check on another horse. If he sees a Llama or hears a donkey braying his eyes start flashing red.
