Mine doesn't seem to in or out of the stable. She has arthritis in her knees so probably finds getting up and down uncomfortable but it must be awful to be upright all the time and bad for her legs and how can she sleep properly standing up?

Mine rarely does - the only time we've caught her is the night I brought her back from camp, and after 7 days of 4hours daily work, who wouldn't want to fall asleep!?! Poor poppet.
xx

mine does although I've only seen her once. She gets up earlier than me!

From the look of the beds when I go to muck out, most of ours have had a lay down in the night, but one of my broodmares (7 year old TB), goes back to her racing days of an early afternoon snooze, and always at 2pm we can guarantee she will be flat out in the paddock sound asleep with the other mares standing guard over her.

3 out of my 5 i have regulary caught napping!!
my 10yr old that i have had since he was 3 lets me sit down beside him in the stable. ive even had to put the headcollar on him while he was lying down and pull him up because he wouldnt get up of his own accord!!
lazy horsey!!

My boy does every night when stabled - I know something is wrong if he has not had a lie down.

Also, when out over night I am sure he does - one morning he had a lie in and was still asleep when I went to get him in - it took an awful lot of persuasion to get him up - I know he is a teenager but that's ridiculous!!

Little Black One always lies down in his stable at night & sometimes has a bit of a snooze out in the field if it is particularly nice weather but the Baggage seldom lies down either in or out of her stable.

My boy never gets up - we have a lot in common! I go out to him at 9.00 in the morning and he's a big heap in the field. He has another kip in the afternoon. Don't know what he does at night in the field but he goes for it in the stable in winter. Now he has a new friend and there are two catatonic bodies in the field - I have heard that horses never all lie down at the same time but that doesn't apply around here. He was on his own for a couple of weeks over the summer and I still found him flat out.

As sleeping is one of Donks favorite occupations, yes she does lie down - both sides judging by the shavings on her fleece in the morning!

Mine does in the stable a bit at night but I rarely "catch her" as she gets up earlier than me (!).

Some seem to do it more than others though I think. Sovereign is ALWAYS lying down in the moring and has to be pulled to his feet with much resentful groaning. The pointer, Sizzle, lies down most of the day and looks as if he is dead but his field companion never seems to lie down at all.

I have noticed that the herd tend to lie down together with just one or two standing - especially the geldings first thing in the morning, you can see 5 or 6 lying down and 2 standing guard. So cute

I have noticed that the older (stiffer?) horses seem to lie down less. Maybe they are worried about getting cast in the stable as they are less mobile?

Sandy my elderly mare never used to. She had arthritis everywhere, and I think she found the stable too restrictive to get up again as there was not enough room if she needed a few goes. In the end she would only roll in the sand school and used to stay down for a while and have a sleep in there.

Mine does loads and I love it, I still take a photo everytime even though I know he will do it again tomorrow but I am not used to be able to catch a horse so relaxed that he needs picking up haha!

Yes Ive found Beau flat out fast asleep in the field a few times, sometimes there is no getting him up.

He likes his belly scratched when he is flat out, lifts his leg out of the way so you can reach!

I thought he was dead the first time I saw him like this:

One of mine lies down loads, the other hardly ever lies down. He suffers with narcolepsy and wont lie down for some reason, not even when hes in the field. Sometimes when he is really tired he will go to sleep standing up and fall over on his knees. The vet says theres nothing we can do about it, just give him a nice deep bed.

He does but ive only seen him once. He lies right across the stable and used the bank as a pillow. I only know as there is a big dent in the same bank every morning and all the straw is flat right across the middle of the stable.

I dont think he rolls in there though, hes a bit big

Only caught him lying down in field once aswell. He rarely comes in dirty so dont think he does it much in the field.

Awww!
Little Black One curls up like a cat (he's ony a tiddler though!) & there is always a little round 'nest' in the same place every morning!

James lies down all the time - theres always a flat perfect imprint of him in his bed and if he's in during the hot summer days he'll kip then. We do actually have to warn new liveries about sleeping habits as some have phoned me before worrying about the fact that he's flat out for hours!

Hehehehe.
Pops calls the bankings Lukey's pillows as the little fella does exactly the same!

If the ponies are ever in I like their beds to be nice and deep, and you can always see, with both of them, the outline of their bodies where they've been sleeping!
They are always caught napping in the fields too, and if you're very quiet and they ar very sleepy you can go and sit with them while they snooze! Awwww

I'm even more concerned now after reading about all your horizontal horses. My only hope is that she does lie down in the paddock when I'm not there, but as there is no evidence of grass stains or mud I have my doubts. Worrying!
