on the way out the farm this morning I saw a couple of ladies with 3 dogs just setting off on their walk down the long avenue - Off road
then on the way back there was a car parked in the lane at the top of the avenue and we waited for it to come past, when it did the chap in the car rolled down his window and said, "a dogs just been run over, lots of blood and stuff don't go that way, just ran out under car, its dead" and started driving off I just wanted to jump on him and rip his head off but instead totally broke into tears.
The poor dog only had to be on the road for about 2 yards and its a really quite village road, what the hell was he doing going that fast to kill a dog, I just feel so sorry for the ladies they were out in the sun with their 3 dogs and now one of them has gone, they must feel awful, I wish we had gone down the lane and said something to them but the lady I was with thought I would make it worse as I was so upset.
I know there has been a resent post about cars and dogs but this has brought it home to me and I will not be taking my little Minnie out with the horse anymore it is not worth it, people can be so selfish the minute they get behind the wheel.

Sorry it long but still pretty cross

minerva.. I think (the way I read it) the man was just warning you about the accident so you didn't witness the horrible scene, I don't think if he HAD killed the dog he would have then bothered to stop and tell randoms (no offence) about it - I would imagine the 'driver' that did hit the dog was still down the road and this man that alerted you was thinking of you/the owners/the dog by diverting you away from it a different way.

I could be 'way' off line here but don't think he'd tell you if he actually did it!!

oh yes he said he had done it clear as crystal - thats what set me off, i did think he was just warning us at first, i geuss he did at least have the grace to stop and talk to the owner which alot of people wouldnt have done

But dogs should be on leads near a road. You can't blame a car driver if a dog suddenly runs out in front of it, there may not be time to brake or braking hard could be more dangerous.
I know its an unfortunate thing to happen and must've been awful for the owner of the dog, but as you didn't see what happened i don't see how the car driver can be blamed.

It is awful but at the end of the day no matter how quiet a road or how well behaved a dog is, its just NOT safe to run a dog loose down a road.

Its horrid, I've seen it at the bottom of my road. A Staff was hit and killed, the driver stopped and stayed with the owner who was obviously upset but kept going on about how he'd never run off before - there you go a well behaved dog but it only takes one thing. The stupid man is doing exactly the same with his new dog, walking it without a lead!

I quite happily take my dogs out with my horse but I will never ever take them on the roads with him and if I di it would certainly not be without leads. I'm lucky in the respect that I can do a decent hack without going on roads so its quite safe for me to take them with me.

no one is "blaming" the car driver, if the dog bolted out in front of him and he didnt see it i can apriciate there is nothing he could or should have done, the owners were not walking the dog on the road off a lead they were walking up the foot path to their car parked on the layby next to the footpath and it must have been a split second bolt from the dog enthusiastic to get to his car. It upset me and i was cross with the car driver, thats just how i felt, i didnt say anything to him as it was nothing to do with me but it has definatley taught me not to take my dog with me, i have taken her many times around the same lanes with me, she wears a pink relflective coat and i was fooling myself that cars could see her!
i will stick to the farm when she is with me from now on and i see that as a lesson well learnt and i hope if other people take their dogs with them when riding on the roads this may make them also think twice.

You don't have to be going fast to kill a dog - it could run out more or less under your wheels - and if it's run over, it will be the weight of the car, not the impact that will kill it. People are less likely to be run over, and more likely to be knocked down, dogs and cats the other way around.

IT wasn't the drivers fault so why do you want to rip his head off and assume he must have been speeding.

Run over a dog at even 5mph and you'll probably kill it. It's the owners fault for letting the dog off the lead on a road. It's a hard lesson to learn sometimes. Years ago, my own 'never runs off' dog was hit by a car (not killed, but needed to go to a vet) when we were walking down a footpath 10 foot away from the actual road. My mum was walking to meet us. When she saw us she bent down and gestured to my dog. For some reason, my dog didn't recognise her, spooked, and ran straight into the road and was hit by a van. The driver stopped and took us to the vets. He felt terrible but it wasn't his fault at all. After that, she was always on a lead even near a road, never mind walking along it.

I can only reiterate so many times that that is how I felt not what I did! believe me there is a difference and contrary to our governments belief you do have a right to free thought, if not free speech,

I dont get it the dog was out on the road and it gat hit by a car.why were you angry at the driver for trying to warn you about an upsetting scene?
id be more angry at the walkers who got their dog killed..the dog could have caused a serious accident and you dont have to be going fast to kill a dog!...here in ireland if your dog gets hit by a car and damages it you have to pay to fix the car cos its your responsibility to have the dog under contol in public.Yet another time when using a lease like your ment to would have prevented a nasty situation..
