Apologies as this is also in dogs, I'm just tired and desperate for other peoples opinions;

Following on from yesterdays post the little dog didn't make it. After much frantic ringing around on the vets part and mine we managed to get a little foster bitch, who's pups have just been weaned only the owners insisted that she come here, rather than the other way. I'm eternally grateful that the pups have been given a second chance, and tbh grabbed at whatever offer I could, as it really was generous of the owners.

This is where I come into it.

The owner was distraught, and I ended up bringing foster mum straight here whilst hubby collected the pups. She'll sit with the pups, will let them feed but isn't overly keen on them. I'm having to do the washing and have been latching them on and sitting to keep her still whilst they feed. They do wriggle over and manage to get a suckle on their own, but she doesn't lay down for them etc and they're never satisfied otherwise.

I know it's going to be harder this way around, as well as a new litter of someone elses pups, who I must admit she is taking a bit more interest in, ie if they're loud she'll go investigate, and I'm aware that she's in new surroundings so will be unsettled, but do you think over the next couple of days something will 'click' a bit more with her, or will I be getting up and latching them every two hours until they're older?

I don't anything about breeding dogs - but I would imagine that new surroundings and the fact that she thought she'd just managed to get rid of her pups she finds a bit confusing. I am sure it a couple of days she will have settled and will be back into her old routine again. I know that doesn't really help at all....

Firstly, I don't claim to be an expert, and I am sorry you lost your bitch.

My experience of bitches and puppies, is that bitches get fed up with their own puppies very quick. My own whippet couldn't wait to leave her babies. Within a couple of days she wanted to come for a walk with me and at two weeks, she did not want to sleep with them and visited them briefly for a head count and a feed, then left them. They had a heat lamp and were in my dining room, so they were very safe.

I think you are in for a tough time and will no doubt have to bottle feed these pups to make sure they get all they need. I would be surprised if this bitch managed to produce enough milk to keep feeding these puppies, nature has told her that her own puppies have finished, so she may well dry up anyway. Make sure you give her plenty of grub to allow her to produce the milk and make a big fuss of her if she settles with the puppies. Don't try and force her to stay with them, you might end up with a very unhappy bitch and injured puppies.
