We have an entire Patterdale dog, who is an absolute pleasure generally. However, he has been for a walk this morning and has now become obsessed with whining and looking out of the window. This behaviour will now carry on for about 5 days! When I go upstairs I will hear him howling too! We are pretty sure it must be an in-season bitch having walked past the house - unfortunately we are on a very popular route for dog-walkers! This morning my husband took him out and didn''t meet any dogs at all, but A is a very prolific sniffer! Anything we can do to stop this behaviour (apart from the obvious!)? Or do I just turn the radio up louder so I can't hear him (joke)! So far we are only an hour into this behaviour - it must be frustrating for him as well as annoying for us.

Any advice gratefully received - thanks

Well sorry but I am going to suggest the obvious! If he gets upset when there is a bitch in season about it is going to be kinder and better for him to have'em off. There is always the risk that he may escape and go off looking for lady friends which at best could result in unwanted puppies and at worst him getting lost or even run over.

I realise we have probably been irresponsible owners by not having had him done when he was younger, he is 7 and a half now, and these episodes only happen once or twice a year, probably in total about 6 times and didn't start until he was about 3 or 4.

If he were 'done' at his age, would it solve the problem, or have we left it too late. We asked about it when he was young, and our vet was of the opinion it was unnecessary if it wasn't affecting him at all - which it wasn't at the time.

Yes it would still solve the problem. You havnt been that irresponsible if he doesnt have accidental offspring running around you've done ok! You followed your vets (irresponsible!) advice!! Book him in, if he is fit and healthy its well worth it...for his health benefits as he gets older too.

Thanks guys (& for the assureance I am not a bad mother!) - no offspring at all wandering about! I may have done him a slight injustice as he has actually been fine since then - he brought me a ball to play with him, and seems to have forgotten all about his latest love!

But thanks for the advice - I will investigate 'the op'!
