My bitch is having her first season and my dog wants her really bad, is there anything i can do or get that can help at all? She has been in season for about a week and a half and until now she has been telling him off and he has not been that bothered but as she must be coming into the peak of it he is going actually insane trying to get to her.
Obviously i am keeping them separated when possible but its difficult in a small house and when they are used to being together all the time especially when were out on the yard.
I also know that the future answer will be to get one of them 'done' but as i say this is her first season which she has to have before being spayed and im thinking of keeping my dog entire and using him as a stud dog so dont want to just whip his bits off without thinking it through as i dont think they will be any good just stuck back on!!

Any suggestions??

If he's being a problem now then it may not be a good idea using him as a stud dog because once he knows what it's all about he'll excentuate his behaviour more.

The only thing you can do really is what you're doing and keeping them seperate. Unless you have a friend or family member who can have the dog until your bitch has finished her season as she's still got a couple more weeks to go.

Any dog with Balls will be desperate to get to an on heat bitch... Using him as a stud dog won't make him worse, all he is doing is just showing natural behaviour.

We have 2 entire boys and one castrated boy. Both entires were used as studs (Although one is now unfortunately infertile so hasn't for a few years) but he and the other current stud dog will always get very excited when our girls are in season, but even my mutt with no balls gets a bit fruity!!

Fortunately we have kennels so it is easy to keep them apart, we just make sure the in season bich is in the furthest kennel away from the entire boys!!

You can get sprays but I've never used them and OH who has in the past said they aren't very effective!
So other than keeping them apart there is little more you can do, if they are being a nightmare then maybe the suggestion of letting one go on holiday with a friend or relative might be the best way forward!! Good luck!!

I'd have them both neutered - it's a myth that you need to wait past first season to have a bitch speyed. The only reason you would wait past 6 months of age in some breeds is an increased risk of urinary incontinence. There is evidence from a study at Bristol that the lessened risk of mammary tumours later in life outweighs the benefits of waiting until 12 months of age for speying.

What about the implications for bone growth etc? There are more issue than just mammary tumours to consider. I think that is a bit of a sweeping statement, it isn't as black and white as that...

Some references here

seeing as you reference a study

I don't personally agree with spaying early - am all for spaying bitches - but not when they so young...

In response to OP - it would prob be best if you could get someone else to look after your male dog for a couple of weeks, until the season has finished.

My dog was put in kennels. The bitch was the right age but he had problems and we were, at the time, unable to get him castrated but we knew we didnt want to breed from him.

It wasnt great but had to be done. I would agree that if you can, find someone to take the dog for a week or so.
