Hi all,

I have taken on a patterdale terrier. I've had him since march. He was 15 months old and up for rehoming because his owner could not walk him due to illness. After lots of conversation he sounded like he would fit in.

Unfortunately he is not as they said he would be. He is scared of men, barks incessantly, to say he is bad on the lead is an understatement.

we are booked in for obedience one on one training in a week and a half.

We have worked so hard with him and got to the point where we have recall, can walk on with the lead on the collar (still get silly if we see anything exciting) got some weight on him etc.

I was walking him this morning with my other dog and my neighbour and her dogs.
we let them off and call them back on the VERY rare occasion we see anyone else.
this morning someone came along with two dogs, I didn't see them quick enough to call him back (please don't slate me for this) the dogs were on the lead and started growling and going for him. I ran and tried to grab him.

Once another dog starts he can't snap out of that mode and gets obsessed with carrying on the arguement.

he ended up biting one of the dogs on the back end above the tail. He was aiming to do this and seemed determined to get the dogs in this area. He then wouldn't let go.

I have arranged to pay the vet bill and all dogs are OK.

Does anyone know why he would be so determined to get the other dog like that? He is friendly normally. Although can get worried when on the lead and maybe utter a growl at other dogs or bark.

I am going to walk him on a long line and muzzle him in future. Which is back a few steps but safety is paramount.

does anyone know if he will repeat/ can be trained out of this behaviour?

Thanks
