My little jack russell just killed a huge rat but was bitten on her muzzle. Does she need any jabs from the vet? I am not worried about the wound itself.
If she's up to date with her jabs then don't worry. Lepto is the main concern, carried in rats urine. Just clean the would with a suitable antiseptic and keep an eye it.
Thank you. I thought she was up to date but her vaccination card says June 2009. I think that I took her last year but forgot the card so will ring the vet tomorrow to check.
Please bring her to the vet for a check up...my fella was bitten by a rat in Dec and despite loads of vet care and our best efforts we had to let him go on 4th Jan. His kidneys eventually couldn't cope and despite dialysis and the best of intensive care it was too much. Granted there was prob an underlying issue with my fella's kidneys (rescue so didn't have his history) but i had him at the vet the first nite he was bitten and it still wasn't enough. The biggest prob with lepto is that there are so many different strains not all are covered by the vaccine
