I had one for my old GSD, it was one of the metal ones with a rubber mat covering. She got used to it quite quickly after a few practices with it laid on the floor. It was quite bulky though, had to carry it on the back seat as it wouldn't fit in the back with her.
I don't have an old dog, but I do have a big dog (Bouvier de Flandres) He hasn't figured how to get in the car (4X4) so I lift his front legs in, then his back legs. He is bl**dy heavy though. Then there's the question of where I put my hands when handling his back end
We were given one for Sandy but she refuses to use it. Yellow Dog had a comedy moment with it tho - he got all excited and raced up it, couldn't stop and ended up in the front seat
Got a brilliant one, plastic with grip, lab uses it very quickly after a few days intro. Just introduce it to them on the floor first!
If you need a hand with introducing it to them let me know.
They sound good. He's got slightly dodgy hips and he's so big, trying to heave him in risks hurting him, so I think it's time we get one of these. He's pretty chilled out, so hopefully he'll get used to walking up and down.
I'm glad everyone thinks they're safe - I was worried about the ramps sliding off the bumper of the car when the dog is half way up. That isn't likely to happen is it?
A friend made one for my old lab that folded in half so could be transported easier. Caffrey was o.k coming down it but didn't have the strength in his back end to walk up it I only used it a few times but found he was happier being lifted in and out.
Re slipping, think you can get ones that hook onto the rear somehow
