Watching Oliver Townend's XC on tv yesterday. Did anyone else see one of the spectators kicking & hitting a small dog? Last view was of it cringing down & a raised hand.

No but maybe its a step in the right direction!!!! too many dogs and children are allowed to cause nuisance and danger in public....

Was this the first year in history no dog got loose to chase a horse??? I recently read how horsy/doggy people would be disappointed with no dogs allowed at the Olympics....I think that is brilliant!

No, there was a loose border collie who chased a horse after the 4th fence, the one with the little houses. It came back after a few mins. Not sure if it was on a lead or whether it had slipped its collar. Sigh. It's going to happen I think.

Didn't see owner hitting dog I'm afraid.

I didn't see the dog hitting either , i'm glad though cos it makes my blood boil - why put the dog it that situation , why not leave it at home , alot of dogs are fine with thier owners horses at home , but running horses and a potentially disasterous situation could easily be avoided . i know there are plenty of people that wont agree with me , but i hate seeing people hit animals for what really is instinctive behaveiour.:(

Hmmm - not sure beating an animal like that is the answer to anything. Sure, discipline matters and animals should be chastised if they have knowingly been disobedient, but I'm not sure it isn't the owners who should be dealt with if their animals are causing a problem!

This was in about 40 minutes of the competition starting! The dog chased the horse after the 3rd fence and stopped at the 4th. We were there with some girl holding on to it not knowing what to do! Didn't have a collar on so must've slipped it's collar or choke lead.

I say anyone who owns a dog that gets loose should be fined. Maybe then people will make sure they do actually have their dogs under control. You never know if a loose dog will one day cause a horse and rider to have an accident.

I was chatting with MBOF while we were walking round the course and saying how dodgy it was to take a dog. After 5 hours walking round in that heat people and dogs can be tired and irritable, then the owner loses patience with the dog cause it wont - sit properly, walk fast enough, walking too fast, wants to sniff another dog... the list goes on.

I saw and have always seen too many dogs forgotten in the enjoyment, being dragged this way and that way and chided for doing things wrong. Sad really that we forget to feel for our four legged friends and remember they are only animals and they don't really understand the whole process.

What I did see (did anyone else???) was a little girl walking a small black lab with a green collar and lead. The love between those two was just adorable!! :D

i saw it, think it made a lunge at Ollie and it got a kick in the face from the owner and then whacked a few times, i think dogs shouldn't be allowed near the events, for the rider and dogs sake.

I cant understand why people take their dogs to events like this, or things like game fairs.

Yesterday was bleeding hot, and expecting dogs to wander around and lie in the full sun all day is ludicrous, especially when their owners know full well dogs cant manage their temperature the way we do. It makes my blood boil.

Also, OH said how irritating the barking was, all you could hear way yapyapyap woofwoofwoof yap.

One did get loose and into the lake ,thankfully they just got it back before the horse arrived.

Dogs should be banned from these events. :( :(

Totally agree! The number of times I fell over or stood on dogs yesterday!! And if I wasn't falling over the dogs, their bl00dy leads kept getting caught up in my legs because the owners couldn't even be bothered to keep them on a short lead.
And the looks I got from their owners when the poor things yelped after having their feet stood on as though it was my fault?! You can't see them when there's a crowd of people crowded around a jump!
Poor things were made to suffer the long hours and heat purely for their owners enjoyment. It's so wrong!
We went and sat in front of the big screen to watch the last few riders and the number of dogs that were crashed out, completely exhausted from the whole thing was disgusting!
They should definitely be banned and left at home.

We took our dogs yesterday, on short leads with a harness on the new one as well as a colar (just in case!) and a big bottle of water for them. They had a great time. They absolutely love big ODEs and game fairs. Yes it was hot, but guess what - we actually gave them drinks and sat down under leafy trees now and again (where it actually got quite cold due to the breeze). Yes some of them are hard to see in a crowd, but so are the people sitting on the floor with picnics. At the end of the day, there are thousands of people there, so you do have to look where you're going! As for them crashing out at the end of the day - thats what dogs do! Ours charge about our fields all day at home, then crash out at night. If you looked at most of the dogs yesterday, they were behaving fine and wagging their tails.

As for the boyfriend who couldn't hear - perhaps Wimbledon would be more up his street! Not sure what there was to hear other than a loudspeaker, and I didn't notice many yappy dogs??

I think it'd be a great idea to ban dogs from such events.. they really do get in the way!! I'm catching up on badminton now and all I can hear is yapping!!

you know i didnt actually believe you but i recorded the replay and just saw it. there was no need to kick the poor thing. And i do think dogs should be banned, i have to say i didnt have any trouble with any dogs there but its safer for them to be left at home. Too many people and other dogs.

If we're banning dogs can we please ban under fives as well? IMHO it's too much for them and I'm always falling over/banging into them and being glared at. Plus I can't stand the sound of children snivelling and it ruins my day.

LOL! Im not a fan of kids so yeah, lets ban kids :D haha.

Definately ban dogs from horse events, they are a nucience [sp?]. and all dogs should have to be kept on leads ,except working dogs, generally especially when walking in the countryside.

Lets just ban dogs full stop shall we?

I don't understand this forum sometimes....

We are saying, ban them at these big events not ban them altogether! i have dogs and i love them but i will not take them to such a busy place. there were so many dogs, some fighting, some really hot and bothered and being dragged all over the place. there was one poor dachsund or however you spell it, and it was being made to run on its tiny little legs. It was exhausted and my friend ended up yelling to the owner to pick it up.

Also it will stop them from breaking free and chasing the horses.

OMG!!! see you havent got kids yet!!! I can assure you i can well imagine it is not through choice to take young ones to events like this but why should adults miss out!! Would be pretty lonely existance for familys with under 5's lol!

Dogs should definately be left at home... it is not illegal to leave your dog at home alone... it is kids ;)

Alcraw have you actually read all the posts on here? Why would you drag a poor dog round in that heat anyway? And the comment originally was made about someone kicking and hitting their dog. Lets hope someone who knows them and saw their despicable behaviour points it out to them.
