Dog crying at night

Since we came back from our holiday of which we had a member of the family stay at home to look after our animals my four year old springer has started crying in the early hours. Now he seems to want to go out for a wee but when he does it is very short and sweet or doesn't bother. I have tried ignoring him but he just continues to cry, also when ignoring him I worry that he really does need a wee. It is very strange as he has never done this until recently and we have had him since a puppy, I just don't know the best way to stop it, any suggestions. Obviously we always take him out as the last thing we do before going to bed.
 
Do you know your relative's routine when he looked after your dog? Is it possible that they slept quite different hours or allowed the dog in the bedroom? It sounds like his normal routine has been disrupted and you may need to treat him like a young puppy, i.e. give plenty of opportunities for toilet, otherwise ignore the crying.

The other possibility is that he was a bit anxious when you were away and is now worried about sleeping alone. Has he ever been left before? Was he OK then? Again I would ignore the crying and see if it stops, although it may take a few days or even a few weeks.
 
Hi yes he has been left before but I think our dog sitter lets the dogs have the run of the house at night so this is why I think he is crying. He starts at about 2 ish and if we ignore him he will keep on till my husband gets up at 6. This has been going on for about 3 weeks now. Its very frustrating.
 
How frustrating! I can imagine 3 weeks of this at night is a nightmare.

Sounds like the dog sitter changed his routine! What a shame! I have to say this is one of my pet hates becuase we often use pet sitters and I do ask them to respect the animals' routine (keeps them safer as well esp with the horses).

There may be an element of stress in all this, so I wonder if a DAP diffuser/colar might help? It might be worth a try.
