What is this fad with getting dogs DNA tested ? Just met a couple with a gorgeous lurcher ( had to be deerhound x grey of some sort) who proudly announced they used to think he was a lurcher but the DNA said he was a gwp x Dalmatian.

I DNA'd mine but it was part of a breed database scheme so he is logged in Germany as the definite offspring of his sire and dam and his health test results are all logged and linked to his entry on that database.
There are also DNA tests for identifying which dogs may be carriers or transmitters of genetic defects which I think are useful but I wouldn't shell out to find out which bits my bitsa might have!

The only reason I can think it would be useful would be for insurance maybe?

I can understand DNA testing for those reasons cave canem but these people are only testing to find out what crosses their dog is, as far as I'm concerned my little rescued crossbreeds are just that, I can guess at their cross but at the end of the day does it really matter? And by the sounds of it the tests are useless anyway

Aren't gwp & Dalmatians a similar build, so surely would notice a sighthound influence without test.

I can understand people wanting to answer that curiosity over what their dogs make up is even if not really important, its fairly clear what mix my own crossbreed is so wouldn't bother.

I thought some oddities on these dna tests were due to the limited number of breeds on file but maybe not.

My OH said maybe they got the hair mixed up and someone else is looking at a spotty, rough coated dog saying 'wow I would never have thought he was a lurcher!'

I used to board a greyhound collie lurcher - Sire a greyhound, dam a smooth coated working sheepdog. Rangy black & white dog with ticking & one blue eye.
They moved away. A couple of years later I had someone else bring in the same dog - lurcher crossed out on his original vaccs card & Husky x dalmation written in by the " rescue" in the same pen that scribbled out the original owners details.

Did it matter? - It would if he was treated with ivermectin.
