Dog eating stones

My Dog has started eating stones, i know this because the a coming out the other end, thank goodness.
They are pebbles, not tiny ones but some still have sharp edges and i worry they may get stuck.
He is on a good diet and has chews, he is 11mths old so i worry his diet maybe lacking in something or is it just he likes them.
Its hard for me to stop him as i never see him do it, also we live on a small holding so he has a lot of freedom.
Any ideas, before i ring the vet for advice?

Be really carefull my last dog did this and had to have an opp to remove them, (though he was putting weight on very quickly) - the panic time came when he was being sick and vet got out over 160 3/4 inch diameter gravel stones.

Just stopped him from going on driveway where they were. Good luck.
