Dog Fences-opinions?

For dogs that roam, on a horse/farm yard? They seem to be about 300m which isn't long enough for the area we need it to cover (dogs outdoor sleeping area and around the house), canvassing opinions on whether they work or not? Dog in question responds well to spray anti-bark collar so I have no doubt she would respond as well to this but having no experience of such devices, querying what brands etc.
 
If your girl responds to an anti-bark collar then I think she should be grand with the freedom fence.
I personally declined to rehome my female to someone who used one because I knew she would probably run through it/the stimulation if there was livestock on the other side - it just was not worth the risk/fallout.

I would spend on the high side, to be on the safe side. As with the anti-bark collars, some of the cheaper ones can be less than reliable and it isn't something you want to mess about with.

I have a client who uses one. She had a dog trainer in to train her dogs to use it. Works well.

However, be careful. Technology is not foolproof. A couple of years ago one of the collars broke and the dog escaped and got run over on the road and killed. Now when they are not there the dogs get put away.
 
Yes, that was my thought re staying on the high side, found http://www.dogfence.co.uk/index.htm which looks excellent, just nervous straying into unknown territory! Fence breaking si not so much an issue, traffic is not an issue but dog living with 3 other familys as she pleases is more the issue!

traffic shouldn't have been a problem for them either.... they live in the middle of nowhere. :(
 
My uncle used a freedom fence with great success on his Patterdale who used to like sneaking off to wait at the bus stop :eek: and offered it to me for Dash when he started following walkers off the farm but i declined because 1) it didn't cover enough area to allow him access round the whole farmyard and 2) he was highly likely to spot a rabbit in the next field and bolt through the fence.

Instead I got a GPS tracking collar (similar money) because you can set a perimeter on google maps and then Dash will send me a text when he leaves home - how considerate :rolleyes: :D and I can track him in realtime from my phone using some really cool mapping software called viewranger. It only just arrived today so I will let you know how it works....
 
Ohh that collar seems really quite a good idea and quite fun-do you have a website for it? Would be very interesting to see if the dog is where I think she is but the people adamantly insist she is not!

Do you mean the GPS one? It works in simple terms like a mobile phone on the dogs collar which sends texts to the phone(s) it is linked to. There is also a GPS receiver/transmitter on the collar and the location is pinpointed by this. You can set perimeters where the dog is allowed to go on google maps and when the gps records a position outside this perimeter it sends a text to the linked phone to alert it, it then goes into "track mode" and sends location information every minute until the dog is inside the perimeter again. It can be set to alert you when the collar is tampered with / undone and there is also a panic button on the collar so anyone finding him can get him retrieved asap (or I can alert my OH if I get in trouble while walking the dogs). There is also a radio transmitter on the charger which shuts down the collar within 100m of home to save battery life.

It also feeds the dog at prearranged times and produces poo bags as necessary...........nah sorry :p but wouldn't it be cool if it did :rolleyes: :D

Out of curiosity how are you getting on with this collar?
Like the look of it, would also be interested in how much one dog runs compared to the other one when I have them up the woods (he runs on duracell batteries), think I may have to save up for two of them!!!
