My little terrier is 10 this year and in the last month he has had a coule of small fits? he has lay down on the cool tiled floor on his side; his little legs shake, then after about 10 seconds he tries to get up, but his back end is giving way and he wobbles around like he is drunk!
I rang the vets and they said it was fairly normal? and to let him sleep, but walk him when he felt like going out.

He was back to his normal playful and very fit self a couple of hours later.

Is there anything I should be doing/giving him.

He is fed half a tin of Pedigree Senior a day with a handful of dry mixer biscuits

Thanks

I don't see how that can be "normal", and personally I would want my vet to just give him a once over check.

I had a whippet that did it once and it was never repeated, she was probably about 8 years old at the time.

The only advice I can give, is that when you walk him, try to keep you eye on him, if he did have a nasty turn while he was out of sight, you might have trouble finding him.

The being off balance and drunk like is normal after a fit, it better if the fit only lasts a few seconds, but as rule of thumb we advise from our practice that on the first fit if under 5 mins and dog pulls round ok, then monitor, (some dogs fit and never do it again) however if it happened a second time, we would want the dog in to check it over and we would ask you to monitor times/length of fit and coming around times, for the vet to decifer if meds are needed.

When he does it, try not to touch him, keep things quiet and light and sound in the room to a minimum, speak to him but otherwise just monitor and see he is safe.
They can commonly bite in confusion if restrained and they will fight against it, so drains them of even more energy, they commonly lose control of the bladder and can urinate and sometimes pass faeces, they can also get ravanous after a fit and want to eat.

I cant believe your vet thinks this is "normal"!

I would be taking my dog to the vets and politely demanding a check over at the least.

I had a young dog that started fitting - my vets were VERY quick to run tests and get some appropriate medication going.

Good luck, I hope your dog will be ok.

I would certainly take him to the vet. He may need medication.
Keep a detailed record of every time this happens, the time of day, activity happening before the fit, what happens when he is fitting, how long it lasts and what he is like after the fit and how long the "after effects" last before he is normal again. This will help the diagnosis and treatment.

Thanks everyone, it has only happened the twice, both times early in the morning 7am just after I get them up for walkies! ( perhaps I need to let him lie in lol)
Both times lasted less than ten seconds. He has been back to his normal self very quickly, he is a fairly lively and fit dog

He is booked in at the vets tomorrow am :)

thanks again

If it only had happened once and he was more or less himself afterwards, okay then, maybe it sometimes can happen without that one has to take them to the vet, but only because it can happen, I would still not call it normal.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.
