My mum let my long haired Tibetan Terrier go in the sea on Sunday....TT (DESPITE shower) now looks like a brillo pad :( The sea has matted her coat hugely - she is brushed daily but is completely matted now...what can I do? She is very patient to be brushed - but has her first championship dog show on Friday so I cant clip her!

Please help

Can't help. But killing your mother might make you feel better :)

Matted dogs are a nightmare, luckily I was just able to cut the coat on our bitch when we got her. Tougher when you've got a championship show.

Hopefully some showing people will have a fix.

Have you showed her at open level yet or are you going straight into championship?
It will be a much higher standard so less forgiving if there is anything awry.
I'd take her to a proper dog parlour/groomer with experience of show dogs and see if they can do anything with her - I'd say you're pushing it though :o good luck!!!

Okay, am in total agreement re getting dog to someone experienced asap. You might have a problem putting her in with a groomer tho - for two reasons - the first is that not all groomers are experienced in handling show coats. They take special care and above all, if it's not conditioned and brushed properly, irreparable damage can be done to the coat. The second reason is you might get laughed at if you try to book in with a groomer in such short notice. Any groomer worth his/her salt will be booked for weeks over the summer months.

I would maybe try to get on the phone asap with someone from the Tibetan Terrier club if there is one and speak to someone who shows their dogs. Or if you know any breeders or handlers, they might be willing to give advice.

I am NOT experienced enough with show coats to take such a job on myself, however if it was my dog, and I had to take matters in to my own hands, then what I would do is this:

Bath the coat with a protein rich shampoo - I would use something like K9 Competition which is very good on coated breeds show coats. And then I might use a hot oil treatment (eg V05 from the chemist). And as a final rinse, I'd probably make sure it was a cool rinse to re-close the hair shaft.

Let me know where you're located, I might know of a groomer/handler that can give advice, or at least point you in the right direction. Then again, location doesn't matter a whole lot, you could always ring up! I would try Scotgroom located in Carluke -- tel 01555 770 333. Agnes Murphy has loads of experience with show dogs of all types - so give her a try.

Best of luck!

I can fit one in tomorrow ( cancelled hospital appointment).
It might take all day and I would sit her in conditioner and comb through inch by inch.
Then I would bath and recondition.
I'm on the Notts Derbys border. Agnes in Carluke would be who I'd recommend in Scotland.
