I'm looking for some recommendations please on equipment to purchase.
This will be mainly used on my working cocker who currently resembles a yak.
I’m looking to clip his whole body and not looking to do any fancy styling, so no feathering left.
So I’m looking for:
  • Clippers & what blades should i use
  • Slicker brush
  • Straight Scissors
  • Thinning /Blending Scissors

Fab question and one I was thinking of posting!!

Would love hints and tips on coat grooming for my new working cocker.

I’ve just done a bodge job with the horse clippers 😱😂🙈🤭

Although I’d rather not clip the top of the body as it’s lovely and silky

If you're going for the 'all off' then a good pair of clippers is really all you need.

Oster are probably the best and will chug on forever. Buying cheap human hair rubbish from Argos is a false economy really as they won't last. I'm only on my second pair of Oster clippers and I've lost count of the number of clips of my own dogs plus the rescue beasties. Blades however, I've gone through a few of those!

My current pair are soft touch twin speed but the slow speed is a total waste of time - I've never used it so wouldn't recommend.

Two of mine are clipped 'all off' and short and I use a number 10 blade on them all over, except for ears. They're just trimmed with scissors. For a longer length a 7F gives a nice cut.

Thinning scissors are fabulous as you can't go far wrong with them but you probably don't need them if it's all coming off. Unless your woof has particularly hairy ears.

As with anything, practice makes perfect. Keep your blades sharp and well oiled and you won't go far wrong. If the blade gets too hot, have a rest and come back :)

I'm potentially looking at getting some Andis Clippers and using 7F as i don't want the Cocker to look like he's been shaved with a Bic razor (ha!)
Also won't be touching his head or ears as i personally don't like that look

I'll try and get a picture of the cocker Harvey aka Yak

The thinning scissors will be used on the Springer girls as they don't need clipping, just tidying up their wispy feathers and lady curtains (back end)

Andis clippers, 7F blades.

Thinning scissors - Artero, go for single rather than double
Straight scissors - Groom Professional Medio
Both are not expensive and have lasted well for me (five springers to trim)
Slicker brush - I like my Andis one

I saw Christies direct have a 10% off voucher on your first order the other day - might take the sting out of any purchases a bit?
