Just had someone come to clip old dog as thought she might not be able to cope with the grooming parlour. What a nightmare! Woman didn't seem to have any idea how to clip a setter, but dog was struggling to stand for an hour and a half,
Three of us were propping her up, and we started in the middle of the room and ended up squashed by the door ! Had to call a halt in the end, now I know what half cut means :D

Well I do have some dog clippers that have been in the cupboard for 10 years! Used to have to do my other old setter, but I make such a hash of it Id rather get it done properly. I think I will have to sharpen them up !

Clip a setter? eek I hope not - but then again if it's an old dog it may be kinder. You can see where the confusion may lay - correct trimming of a setter is hand stripped and scissored, never clipped. But I would suggest getting a mobile groomer with a van come - and if they have a LIPSystem for the table, that would certainly help with keeping the dog up right -- and sometimes it's kinder to just lay the dog down and who cares what it looks like.

Really, our setters have always been clipped ! They have nearly all had a very woolly almost poodle like coat though not the glossy shiny type.

Yes MoC they were, I assumed that was the reason we didn't have the lovely glossy coats. One of them could have passed for a setterpoo before they were invented :D

Bless the old dog. Our setter was clipped (English X Gordon) as he had rubbish fur after castration. He looks lovely clipped though.

I would just do the job yourself if you have clippers, it is not like the appearance is so important. Unless the experienced clipper could come out and tidy up?

Sometimes you can maintain the glossy look with really frequent stripping, but once it's gone it's nearly impossible to get back.

I used to clip my old BT, he was hand stripped for years but never really liked being done and tbh when he got older I just wanted him to be comfortable in the warm weather, didn't really care what he looked like. Actually he looked OK, just not like a BT! I also used to do him in stages, a bit each day over a week so he didn't get stressed.
