The BBC have just reported that the police dog handler responsible for the two dogs left in his car, will be prosecuted for their death.

Glad to hear it. If that is the case it would appear that it wasn't a breakdown of an a/c system but just neglect.

Wish the same would happen to all people who let this happen. As MM says, if it was genuine neglect and not a technological malfunction, then I am glad that charges are being brought.

Ditto, the police don't have a good reputation with their dogs, I remember years ago a training centre was reported for cruelty and there was a public outcry. Then there was that police couple whose neighbour filmed them being cruel to their dogs in the back yard.

It would serve them well to throw the book at this guy. They won't name him though for fear of reprisals.

I think the incident a few years ago you are thinking of was the Essex police. A police dog Acer was hanged (hung?) by his collar . There was a huge outcry at the time and I think generally the police dog units have cleaned up their acts, they were certainly struggling to get GSDs from reputable breeders a few years back. In all fairness I think most police dog handlers (and I have met quite a few) have a really good relationship with their dogs and they are part of a team, as the programme on tv showed last night.

Warning, does not make pleasant reading

Yes I think you are right, its a sweeping generalisation to say all are bad but its a classic example where only the bad cases are remembered. It makes us wonder how much more goes on that the public don't get to hear about.

Good! I'm pleased that something is being done about this, he must be an example to the public that it doesn't matter who you are it's unacceptable to cause such suffering to defenceless animals.

OMG, that's really horrific.

Poor dog. I can't believe anyone truly thinks that's the way to "train" an animal.

I agree that the majority of police officers in the dog/horse sections are in it because they respect the animals and have as good a bond with them as we do our own animals. It just takes one or two of the minority to give them a bad name.

Another one going to stick up for police handlers, we have also always had a very good relationship with our local dog unit, three of our trainers are police or ex-police and they have an amazing bond with their animals and are excellent with ours.

I am in no way definding what happened, however during the time it happened we had a few overcast mornings that became blazing hot days. He may have dashed into the station and got stuck talking to someone, it is easy enough to forget how hot it is outside when stood in a cool building.

I know none of that really matters as the dogs should not have been left in the car for any amount of time, but these dogs would have been his Partners, what he did was stupid and yes he should be made an example of, but I am sure no one could make him feel worse than he already does.

Well lets hope that is the case then and I hope it haunts him forever.

It probably will.

How would you feel if you made a mistake that result in one of your animal's deaths?

For all we know he may have never left his dogs in the car, they may have wanted for nothing, he made one mistake that has the most dire concequences and we all sit here judging him.
Maybe he was a cruel and vicious police officer, again we don't know, all I know is that I have done made lots of stupid mistakes and got away with them, I don't feel in a position to sit judging him, just thankful I have been lucky.

I admire your trying to defend the indefensible.

I agree with you actually.

Whilst there is no excuse whatsoever for what happened, and it is quite right that he be prosecuted, I can't help but feel a twinge of sympathy for him. As you say, we don't know the circumstances. Perhaps he was an evil dog abusing man... but I find it hard to accept that someone who must have had a very tight relationship with the dogs could be so knowingly neglectful- perhaps, as you say, the weather was misleading- who knows. He must have worked with those dogs day in day out- to lose them in such an awful way, and for it to be totally your own stupid fault must be an awful thing and I think it will certainly haunt him forever.

Hear, hear.

I've made many mistakes myself so I would like to ditto all of what The Henmeister have said. If it turns out that these two dogs died due to a mistake, I will feel sorry for both the poor dogs and the dog handler.
