I'm so incredibly gutted and worried.

I took the dogs, all 4 for a quick run round the fields and they were all just ahead of me. Noticed Basil, my daughters dog had something and was licking away madly at it. Took it off him and was horrified to see it was a little bag- very split open of green poison and he was licking the actual stuff inside, I took a quick photo (for the vet) and did a U turn back home calling the vets on my way. We were there and in the consulting room just under 30 minutes after i took it off him so i hope that's fast enough.
I've had to leave him there. He's been given medication to make him sick, they are going to give him charcoal and fluids. I have to go back later to see how he's getting on and decide what we do next.
My daughter is at work, I wasn't going to tell her until she got home but I think she may want to finish early if she is able and come to see the vet with me later- I also think i may need her insurance details perhaps

Vibes for the poor little chap. He's so little that I worry even if he did only have a few licks it might be enough to cause issues. I always remember someone having a terrier who ate poison and by the time they got to the vet were just told it was too late and nothing could be done.
I feel sick myself.

Hopefully all is well by now, but a similar thing happened to my dog. It turned out that modern poisons need a lot to be dangerous, so there wasn't any harm done. It was a shame my vets didn't find that out before it cost me £90 to make her sick, but at least they did it quickly. My dog ate nearly a whole one of the block type and she was a JRT.

Sending lots of healing vibes.

You did exactly the right thing and knowing the type of poison is so important so taking a picture was vital. There are still many dangerous rodenticides out there, modern or not! Hopefully with prompt treatment he should be fine. They may want to repeat bloods at different intervals to check his clotting values.

He’s home.
Apparently it was a good kind that would take a lot as Meleeka mentions thank god.
He was made sick and had charcoal and fluids. Apparently his sick was quite green which is a good sign that it came out.

We have to go back tomorrow to have blood tests to check the calcium in his blood as it was a sort that makes the body absorb calcium 🤷‍♀️
If that’s clear he’s safe but right now it’s looking positive.
Such a huge relief.

It had been correctly placed but for some reason, and when I looked around it wasn’t just the one, something had dragged several half eaten packs out and left them lying round.
It’s all been collected in now to prevent any further accidents.

He’s such a tiny squirt!
So glad he is okay.

I was kindly given some poison bait that a rentokil rep gave me along with a couple of bait boxes in 2016 when i worked on site somewhere. I got chatting to him and he was really kind to help me out.

The bait he called them 'flapjacks' they were round about an inch thick, dark green with a hole in them like a giant bagel that could be tied into the bait box with cable ties, to prevent them being dragged out by animals other than vermin. I refilled two that I was given for the yard.

I was told to make sure I cable tied the boxes shut too so animals other than rodents couldn't access them. It sounds like it wasn't the placement of the traps, rather the boxes used or the fact the bait wasn't tied down.

These are the type they sell now.
Proper bait boxes are made as described below to prevent such accidents from happening and bait being dragged out.

I'd get the boxes and bait changed if I were you. It's absolutely not your fault though.

Glad your dog is on the mend x

That's exactly how my dog got it too. It had been carried to where she found it by something else. It was in my empty stable so I know it didn't get there any other way. That rodent had the last laugh I think.

Our Rotters managed to get some rat poison, although we were never sure who had what. Rushed to vet (Sunday afternoon!), where they were made sick, which was hilarious as the vet sent us to walk them on the neighbouring golf course. Vet rang the National Poisons Centre to establish what was the best treatment. They were absolutely fine afterwards.

Such a funny dog, none of our current dogs really enjoy vet visits. I thought after being left and made so sick he'd really not be happy today. He had the terrier shakes in the waiting room but happily trotted off with the nurse to have his blood taken. Came back with a waggy tail and had a treat off the counter. Not at all what I'd expected.
They are happy with him anyway and don't expect the bloods to show anything, in fact it was up to me if they were run or not.
I figured best had just in case. He's over his insurance excess anyway so may as well be safe. Blood tests are expensive!!
