Friend has just dropped their lab off while they go on holiday and the darn thing has swallowed a little teddy. I saw it in her mouth and by the time I got her mouth open it was gone!!.
It was a small toy and a big dog but what are the odds it is going to go straight through?. I have spoken to my vet who says wait and see but am really worried. Anybody else had the same ?.
To give an idea on size teddy was width wise in her mouth and you couldnt see it just that there was something there , do you think it might go through?

Problem is we know it is in there, we dont know how far it has gone yet and wether it will cause a problem so an x ray wont actually tell us anything that we dont already know at the moment. It went down so quick I hope it is going to go straight through.

My now nearly 16yr old Labrador swallowed a very large dish cloth whole at the age of about 3mths. Vet told us to watch her and to try feeding her liquid paraffin (not sure if that's still ok, it was 15yrs ago!) but suggested we might need to syringe it down her - mum stuck it in a bowl and she lapped it up - stoopid Labrador:eek:

We watched and waited and eventually the dish cloth reappeared about a week later the way it went down

Did the teddy have any buttons/eyes on it, that is what would really worry me ?

No it didnthave buttons or anything. It was a teddy that belonged to one of my daughters dolls so was quite small and just stitched details.
We were thinking of a tin of tuna in oil for her tea?. Worried sick at the moment. She obviously seems fine at the moment but not sure how long we should worry for. Not letting her out of my sight at the moment.
Now I remember why I have collies !!!!

Give her a nice big meal of eggs/milk/Isogel ,about twenty minutes later push down a walnut sized piece of old fashioned washing soda.In seconds all of her stomach contents will be vomited up,including the bear.If it is recent it will still be in the stomach, not passed into the small intestine,so plenty of time to retrieve it.

My old dog used to eat socks and pants he usually pooped out then one time we went away and he was poorly in kennel they took him vet and after 24hours he threw it up and was then fine- prob about 4 days after he ate it. The dog will most likely vomit it up- but the method above will make it quicker

Thanks for your advice, have tried East Kents method but she hasnt been sick yet , worried about too much soda.
If she was mine it would be different. will keep you informed!
Any other ideas ?

thanks DD, she has been eating grass and tried to have a poo but no success. Cant have gone that far yet surely ?
She has now eaten so much horse poo on top but time will tell

The dog should have been taken to the vets as soon as it happened. My dog did this with an ankle sock a few years ago Xmas eve and we shot him straight down the vets. Vet gave him a jab to make him sick and 10 mins later up it came.

Chances are this will get lodged and make the dog very sick and the dog will end up needing an operation to remove it in 2-3 weeks time. 10 times worse in the long run for both owner and dog.

Again, something similar happened to my other dog with a small squeaker from a dog toy. Vet told us to 'see how it goes' and dog ended up in and out of vets twice after and It didn't even show up on X-ray but 2 weeks after eating the squeaker (size of a 50p) my dog ended up very very ill. Not eating, not being able to go to the toilet, crying, being violently sick. Rushed round to the vets and dog went straight in for an operation in which the squeaker had been lodged in the intestine and my dog now has an 8 inch scar on his belly.

The dog should have been taken to the vets as soon as it happened.

^^^This!

The problem with waiting is the possibility of tissue death if the object hasn't moved. The teddy can absorb fluids which can make it even larger within the gut. Get the dog to the vet ASAP!

I must admit I would be on to the vets, the fact its someone elses dog would make me more concerned.

A friends Springer has twice now eaten stupid things ,a towel and tights and both required an operation. When he comes here to stay everything vaguely interesting is put out of harms way but if he did eat something I would be straight down the vets. I hope friends would so the same rather than waiting to see.

Let us know how it goes.

I too would have taken straight to vets, no question about it.

Also there is no way I would be taken advise on a forum as to how to make a dog sick with soda crystals.

I got advice from my vet as soon as it happened and took their advice. She is fine at the moment eating, drinking and going to the toilet .
Will ring vet again today .
If the vet had said bring her over I would have done

Have spoken to the vet again and he is still happy to leave her for another day. I have been in touch with her owners and will refer her to their vet and leave the decision up to them. She seems fine still at the moment

My late golden retriever once swallowed a tea towel and managed to pass it without any problems, however several months later he swallowed a small piece of soft rubber off the sole of a trainer. Unfortunately as it happened on a weekend and the vet had no one available to hold him for an X-ray (long story which ended in formal complaint of misconduct against said vet) he was left at the clinic overnight to be looked at the following morning. The vet arrived next morning for find him dead. The cause was peritonitis as the rubber had perforated his intestine. They admitted liability as they advised had he been X-rayed immediately as per my request they would have done an out of hours emergency operation and he would have survived. Don't want to scare you but after that incident I always panic when I hear a dog has swallowed something or other.
I would get doggie down to the vets pronto and ask them to X-ray him to ensure teddy isn't lodged or has caused a perforation anywhere.
Good luck and hope all is ok.

Good news teddy has been retreived. she has thrown it up and I just managed to wrestle it off her before she ate it again.

I have spoken to three different vets two at my practice and one at theirs all who gave the same advice so I listened to their proffessional opinion and waited. I am sure we were lucky in this case but if I ask advice from fully qualified vets and then didnt listen and took the dog anyway , what would they have done ?

The other option would have been instantly down the vets, apomorphine? which makes them instantly very sick. Had the "pleasure" of lunging my lab around an indoor stable and shoveling up the piles of vom after the dear soul raided his food store (now locked with lock at top of door after he got through the closed twist knob door). Had to shovel and supervise to prevent re-eating (minging beastie).

OH also did the same when dog ate the plastic bag which had contained his food - so that's obviously his preferred approach. Apo isn't massively expensive afaik (OH is a vet, so drugs at cost and obviously no consult fee when he does it in his own time).

Thanks wishful, had I known that that was an option I would have asked my vet for it straight away, would have saved a few sleepless nights !!
I do wonder if she had already sicked it up and re eaten. She is so obsessed with food (typical lab ) . She so nearly swallowed it again, I havent moved that fast in a while.:D
