My older dog is in hospital today after not being able to stand up this morning. He has had a few health worries recently but deteriorated rapidly overnight. He is on a drip and having an ultrasound. How do you cope with other dogs if the worst happens, our other dog is already missing him ,keeps wandering around looking for him and he’s only been away a couple of hours.

Sorry to hear about your poorly dog. I would keep the routine for the one at home as normal as possible and if the worse happens ask the vet best course of action. I know they say that horses should get the chance to see their friend, not sure that applies to dogs. Hope your poorly dog pulls through and comes home today.

I'm sorry to see your news.
We had a Rottweiler with bladder cancer, which we treated (conservatively) for about 6 months. At the same time we had 2 x2yr old Labs, which we got when the Rotts sister had to be pts, leaving her as an only dog, which she really struggled with.
When it was obvious that Rotts quality of life was deteriorating, we made an appointment with the vet to take all 3 dogs. Rott didn't enjoy vet visits and it was during the Covid period, so the appointment was in the car park. The Labs were taken for a short walk while the vet did the deed, then the Labs were allowed to approach the body. They didn't seem particularly interested and got back in the car. Then, almost as if they couldn't believe what they had seen, they got back out and had another sniff and a good look at the body. When they were ready, they got back in the car again and the vet removed the body. I have had a dog pts at home in the past, with the advantage that the others saw what had happened.

So it’s the worst news, he has a tumour on his spleen and it is spread to his liver. He is being PTS this afternoon. At least he went for a lovely walk yesterday, I just can’t believe how quick it has been.
So sorry to read this. My old Spaniel had a tumour on her spleen too. Thinking of you, it’s so hard isn’t it. Mine went for a walk on the way to the vets and looking back, it wasn’t a bad way to go.

I'm so sorry. I've had 2 dogs pts in similar circumstances, apparently fine then suddenly not and a tumour found that necessitated almost immediate pts. It is a shock to you but your other dogs probably were aware of the problem before you were. Thank goodness we can do that last kindness for our animals. Thinking of you

I'm so sorry. I lost my 10 year old GSD to this just a year ago, she was fine 24 hours before . With regard to your other dogs, if possible I would let them see him, it does seem to help them accept the loss.

12 1/2 years ago I came on this forum to ask about buying a puppy and got loads of great advice. The resulting pup was Ted. He was a little ball of mischief , spent half his time trying to escape into the fields, a great guard dog. He saved my OHs life when he fell into a diabetic coma by jumping the stair gate and waking me up. He was an amazing character and will be so missed. He fell asleep very peacefully and will be missed so much . To Ted🥂 x

I had an old dog that was a bit off, they x-rayed looking for tumours, all clear, no sign of anything suspicious. 1 day short of 3 weeks later, a fast growing tumour burst her spleen, and she was euthanised. Cancer sucks.

I always take dead dogs/cats home for the remaining pets to see, but I have a burial place for my pets in my Summer cabin's garden, so I need to take them with me back home from the vets anyway. If you don't bring Ted home to bury, I hope you can take your other dog with you to see Ted's body at the vets.

I know of e.g. a dog that for the rest of his life whenever he saw the owner's daughter's car, which Spike had been driven off to the vets in the last time, became convinced that this time, maybe this time, Spike had returned, and was waiting for him in the car.
But if it's not possible to let your other dog see Ted's body afterwards, it's not possible. Lots of owners doesn't do it, and their remaining dogs copes with it, some gets over it quickly, some takes longer. Their grief is individual just as for us.

Otherwise for the dog at home, an Adaptil diffuser can sometimes help a little, and maybe some extra yummy gnaw bones can provide a bit of distraction.
Take care of yourself.
