My 13 year old dogs insurance renewal has just come, its now 66 pounds a month he has arthritis but reached the policy limit for this condition some time ago so I pay for his medication myself, also excess has gone up tp 100 pounds plus 20% of any claim.

Now my question is it it worth carrying on with the insurance bearing in mind he is a 13 year old lab. Hes happy at the moment and comfatable with his medication for arthritis but if any thing were to happen I doubt I would put him through surgery due to his age. I cant decide what to do! any thoughts?

Thats what im thinking but cant make up my mind! Hes happy enough at the moment, but he has slowed down a lot and due to his age and arthritis I would not put him through any major treatment or surgery. I cant claim for his arthritis anyway now so Im thinking its not worth paying the insurance anymore. Just wanted some other thoughts on it really.

I wouldn't pay that amount for a dog of his age. As his arthritis is excluded and you say (rightly imo) that you wouldn't put him through major surgery, then I really cannot see the point. You could put away that amount each month and have a reasonable amount to cover any other problems that might crop up.

we cancelled our dogs insurance once they got to this age, the same thing happened, excess went up, premium went up and you had to pay 20% of any claim. We are fortunate that we have enough savings to pay for any treatment that was necessary but hoped that by having to think more carefully about what we spent we would make a better decision for the dog, rather than just saying "oh, hes insured, just do whatever". I strongly believe that just because we can, we should not always put our elderly dogs through treatment, it is not always the best option for them :(

At that premium & excess you need a bill of over £892 before you come out ahead.
I would put the money aside instead.

I think it makes most sense to cancel and save the money for any treatment. Thanks just wanted to see if I was being sensible or not.
