Hi
We are thinking of getting another dog after a while without. I automatically assumed we would insure it but my husband says he has never bothered before.

What do you good people think? To insure or not to insure, that is the question!

I would always recommend it just because of the insane amounts of money vet bills can mount up to. A lot of people worry about getting a big bill for a broken leg or similar (& yep repairing a broken leg is not a cheap business) but it's the ongoing conditions that can really hurt your bank balance as they're usually things that you end up paying for the duration of the pet's life. I would be very scared to work out how many tens of thousands the insurance has paid out for ongoing treatment for my dogs heart problems, dry-eye syndrome and arthritis over the past few years and this is a dog who has never had any serious accidents / big operations and rarely saw the vet for maybe the first five or six years of her life. If you would have the funds available to pay out if something went wrong very soon after getting your new dog / would be able to afford to keep paying for any conditions developed by your dog for the rest of their life without having to worry then yes you can probably manage without insurance. If not then I would at least seriously consider it.

It depends, simple break of leg without specialist care at this end about £1200.
emergency fee without treatment £110 at this end..........if you can afford this pull out then maybe not, if not get insurance, it also depending on policy cover liability if that also worries you.
Vizzie had 2 dogs hospitalised for a few nights for chocolate poisoning and her bill was over £1000.
Heart conditions and diabetes minus the up to a thousand pound initial testing about £50-£70 a month to treat. My friends doberman has heart problems and they pay £48 a month...no insurance.
Hip replacements over £4000 per hip not including after care and hydrotherapy, my whippets specialist break bill for her leg came to £3000 and my pointer who has a rare condition has topped the £2000 in vet fees within a year.
I recommend petplan:D
