I got Islay (black ex-racing greyhound) at the beginning of May - she was overweight but had a lovely black shiny coat. She was spayed just before I got her.

Over the past 3 weeks or so she has started moulting more and more - to the extent that there is black hair everywhere in the house like tumble weeds! Her shiny coat has gone and she is also moulting out a grey fluffy undercoat - she looks totally moth-eaten at the moment. I am giving her oil in her food.

Mum (who has about 100 years experience of dog breeding

) says she thinks its because Islay has been spayed, but I was just wondering if anyone else had had this?

My last brindle greyhound never had the fluffy undercoat that Islay seems to have, she was just sleek and smooth all the time

I would have thought more along the lines of the fact that she is now living in an indoor environment ater being in kennels for so long, her coat is now adjusting to the environment.i.e shedding what is not needed now she is in a warmer environment, 3 weeks IMO is not enough time for the spay to affect her coat yet...... although eventually it can in some breeds, but it does not necessarily make them moult more just increases growth and thickness and can change condition of coat....this can be overcome with good grooming though.

I would give her a good brush through then bath and dry her....drying get a heck a lot of dead hair out......I groom dogs and use a hight powered dryer and the result when dry after bathing look like half a dog, I normally use a good comb/rake/slicker depending on the hair type.
All my dogs are neutered and their coats are no different...but I do bath and groom then regurlarly.

P.s all our rescue greyhounds that come into to us...moult like this(all from previous kennel environment) or any other breed for that matter...u will find once the dead hair is out she will go back to her shiney self

Thanks Cala I was hoping it would be something like that - I think I may cheat and take her to see my mum (who also grooms & clips) and get her to do her for me

Although considering mum is 69 years old now I suppose I would lift her in and out of the bath...

I just feel quite embarassed about the way she looks at the moment, and since Jura also had an odd coat before I lost her I am a bit paranoid

my mam recently moved her malamute from her conservatory area to her kitchen on a night to sleep....the change in her coat to compensate for the heat change was phenominal.....she shead like no ones business and even changed colour with it

I am hoping it will have one good side effect when it is all over with though - when I got her and posted some pics Prose described her as 'seal' (black with a brown tinge?) which was absolutely correct.

I am hoping that once she has cast all the undercoat she will turn a proper black colour - fingers crossed
