Dog nail injury

Earlier on this evening the eldest dog ripped a toe nail off his back foot completely during stepping in between thing 1 and thing 2 squabbling over a toy. Not sure if one of them is responsible or not.

It has come completely off and understandably bled quite a bit, a bit of canine first aid with a damp towel and it stopped bleeding and he’s walking fine and back to his normal self though I’m sure ego bruised. Is this a vets job tomorrow or a keep it clean and dry at home situation? Our new vets are very good but unlike my old vets who, despite many misgivings with their more recent staff, were very sensible and I feel if I call tomorrow to check they will tell me to bring him anyway. He doesn’t like the vets so if it’s not a big deal, I’d rather not stress him out. But if it’s something which should be looked at as a rule, he will be told to get a grip. Not sure - and this place is always useful for things like this.

I’d keep it clean and dry and maybe covered out and about but open at home. As long as no sign of pain or oozing I’d not go to the vets.

If it were me (which it has been in the past!) I’d keep it clean and dry and manage at home if the dog seems comfortable enough, unless you see any sign of infection.

One of ours did exactly the same, he was a little tender on it for a few days but fine ongoing.

We just bathed the area with salt water every time he came in from outside. Grew back quickly too....

All fine this morning. I have told him he should know better and only ever gets involved with any other domestics between other animals now there’s another intact dog in the house. Old swine.

Cecil did this twice on the same front paw. I cleaned it up as much as I could, he’s a wriggly little thing when he wants to be!
It looked pretty horrible at first, I may have even posted the same as you here.
Healed incredibly quickly both times with no intervention.
It does look nasty though.

If it's no longer bleeding, he's not sore & it's not infected you probably can just keep an eye & take to vet if anything is concerning

My dog did the same I just kept an eye on it and it was fine although the nail that has grown is somewhat deformed, its much thicker and the nail is not smooth and it grows at a funny angle, it kind of curls under so it has to be kept short or it will go into the pad.

She absolutely hates it being trimmed now and it has bled a bit after a few trims but she has never loved nail trims anyway even before this.
