Dog or bitch?

We already have a 5 year old bitch and are about to get a puppy.

I have never owned a dog - always had bitches.

Would you recomend a dog or a bitch as our second dog and why?

Appart from the obvious - what is the difference between dogs and bitches?

Our bitches have always been very loyal loving dogs which is why I've stuck with the girlies so far.

Thanks - I'm in a real dilema as I have pick of the litter.

1 short haired JRT bitch (beautifully marked)
1 rough coated JRT bitch (not nicely marked - but we wanted a rough haired)
1 rough haired JRT dog (beautifully marked)
 
I've always had bitches and am now on my first male and it was a bit of a culture shock :p

Bitches IMO are a bit more independent and easier to deal with. IMO!!!
Go for character rather than colour or coat type, that's what you'll have to live with every day :)
 
I have always tended to have bitches, I do believe they are easier. I had one GSD male who was a big softie, and if anything more biddable than the girls I had at the same time, but given the choice I think I would always pick a bitch.
 
Ironically, since I have three bitches at the moment, I would have a dog given the choice :D They are more affectionate and have a better bond with you in my experience, whereas bitches tend to be slightly more aloof and cat-like? Perhaps that is just greyhounds and lurchers though :)
 
No that's what I meant by independent - I like a dog that can please itself, can cope better alone/without you and isn't up in your face going ME! ME! It's ME! Do you still love me?! What about now? And now? Look at ME! :p but only on his terms, of course :p
I'll definitely have another dog but it did get a bit of getting used to.
 
CC - I must have a strange bitch then!! She is very strong willed but she HAS to be the centre of everyones attention.

She was sat on my knee having a cuddle when I opened this thread, then she saw a very exciting fly and swanned off to kill it and she is now sat next to me trying to climb back onto my knee with a pathetic little look on her face.

Other than my little stange creature I do agree that bitches are more independant, my grumpy old man is so eager to please everyone he meets wheras mums puppy and mine (girlies) couldnt give a toss if they make you happy or not (as long as betsy gets a cuddle!)
 
I love my boys, never owned a bitch but not a concious decision.

Mine are real mummies boys and I love that :D. They are very protective of me and also play rough with each other which I don't think they would do with a bitch - they do with their friends but maybe not if they lived with a bitch day in day out.
 
I have one of each :)

They are both very soppy and loving with both my husband and I and each other, which is lovely. Although the bitch is more adaptable and can cope better without me than the boy. He is a complete mummies boy and is pretty clingy although I don't know if that's a typical male trait or just him

I have 2 dogs and 1 bitch and the dogs are complete and utter mummies boys. If I even think about moving around the house they are poised to follow, the bitch follows too but in her own time(unless there is food on offer)

She is very loyal and loving but not quite as dependant as the boys who only want cuddles off me or my mum. The girly will cuddle anyone she deems good enough :D
 
haha, glad to hear it's not just my boy! I can't even go to the loo without him following, whereas the bitch has more sense and stays put in her lovely warm bed looking on at her idiot brother lying in the freezing hallway waiting for me to emerge!
 
This thread suprises me as I've always found bitches to be like mares - usually a 'one person' alligience and are usually worriers and like to make sure you're ok all the time!

I always wanted a bitch but keep ending up with dogs although after seeing Archie getting himself in a tizz over another dog trying to play with 'his' bitch, I think we will be adding to his hareem rather than having another dog!:rolleyes:

So for me, this time, I'd defo want a bitch, but dogs tend to love anyone who will give them any affection....not too disimilar from their homosapian friends. ;)
 
My current bitch is definately a one man dog - she follows me everywhere. She does like cuddles but is happier to sit or lie by my feet. She is a border collie.

So I think it will be one of the bitches.

Either the ugly rough haired one (we wanted rough haired)
or
the pretty short haired (didn't really want a short haired)

Why couldn't there have been a pretty rough haired pup??????
 
Stella is a cat in dog's clothing. She will seek affection when she wants it, but she'll ignore you if she's comfortable in her bed, or otherwise occupied with a kong. Prince is needy. He likes to stare into your eyes, follow you everywhere, and has to sleep cuddled up to Stella.
 
I had a bitch and wanted a second dog and the rescue advised I should get a younger dog (bitch is very dominant). Works well for my 2 (staffies) and both are very loving and follow me everywhere at home. However at the yard, my boy has to be off talking to all his mates which is a total pain and means I have to crate him when doing stuff whereas my bitch will stick to me like glue without me constantly checking she is next to me.
 
We have always had bitches and I have to say I do prefer them but I couldn't tell you why tbh!! Not helpful eh? In saying that though I adore my little man, Dexter. He is my shadow and was much easier to train although, being a big male rotty, you do have to make sure that you are the boss all the time. I do think it depends on the breed as well. Certainly rotty bitches can be a pain and have their own opinions unless you absolutely insist that it's your way or no way.
Matty dog however, a ridgey bitch, was an angel in every way.
 
We've got a lab bitch at the moment, and she is so playful and friendly, as was the bitch that I had before. My parents dog was soft as anything too. We're about to get another lab from a rescue centre, and was thinking of having another bitch, but they said that they prefer a home that already has a bitch to take a dog, and visa versa. I forgot to ask why.
