We are currently in the process of selling our house and finding somewhere to rent - and it is proving impossible! I have contacted over 20 lettings agencies and all of them say that their landlords will not accept dogs - has anyone any ideas how to overcome this? It seems that the letting agents are blocking this before they even ask the landlords!

BTW we are looking around north Gloucestershire/south Herefordshire/south Worcestershire

Just been through the same....sold house, purchase fell through, having to rent.....did not mention the cat and dog till after seen letting agent and house and agreed terms, THEN told them and signed a form saying would make good any damage done by animals/clean carpets as necessary etc. Mind you, do not think that my animals would do half the damage that small kids do and no-one complains about them!

Good luck - it is the most stressful thing I have ever done!

What a good idea! Will look for letting agents we haven't already approached and adopt that approach I think - I have assured all letting agents that we would be happy to sign a damage form like the one you describe, I also have a £1,500 damage deposit to put down and 6 months rent in advance if required - what on earth do they think the dogs are going to do?!

I agree, stress levels are at an all time high at the moment

I went through the exact same thing when I moved from Manchester to Wiltshire a few years ago. I rang up about loads of houses and eventually did find one that would allow dogs. It was a nightmare though...

Have you tried the local paper for private ads? It's sometimes easier if you talk and rent direct off the property owner rather than going through a letting agent who, as you've found, tend to have a blanket ban on all animals.

It's crap isn't it?

I had the same problem a couple of years ago.

As a landlord, now, I wouldn't have a problem with pets, I just ask for a slightly bigger deposit.

Ask the agents to ask the landlord directly and perhaps try renting privately rather than through an agent.

Good luck XX

Thank you both for ideas - we are going to try putting an advert in the local paper asking for somewhere to rent, and have also done some ads to go in local newsagents, Countrywide stores, saddlers, vets, feed shops etc etc! Serves us right for being soft-hearted and ending up with 4 rescued greyhounds/lurchers I guess...

I have just sold my property and am now renting - I have two dogs. I found that if you deal with landlords directly, it is less of a problem. I paid a £75 deposit which was on top of the usual deposit and is to cover and damage made by dogs / carpet cleaning etc when I leave - that is if I ever leave! I am in love with my little cottage!
