Following on from the bone cancer thread there is a very real possibility my beautiful dog may have to be put to sleep in the near future.

I will ask my vet to come here so she can go peacefully in her own home but I am not sure how this will affect my other dogs.

Does anyone have any advice on this please? Would it be too traumatic for the other dogs too see her or should they be allowed to once she has gone so they understand what has happened?

I had my wonderful Bosworth PTS in May this year. The vet came out as I knew it would be too traumatic for him to go in to the surgery, poppy my young lurcher was his shadow and I knew would struggle if he vanished without her seeing him. I discussed it with my vet and we decided to have Poppy in with him when he was PTS, it was all calm, and quiet with Boz being held in my arms and Poppy standing by, once he was dead we encouraged Poppy to come over and sniff him. She definitely mourned him, but never went to look for him once he was gone. So I think she knew he was gone.

I'm sorry it's come to this but FWIW I believe it helps them to accept things better when they 'know', have seen ans smelt the body. The only time we didn't do this but buried Linnet virtually straight away after she was put down, the others moped around for a long time always looking and listening for her; it actually made it harder than it already was for us so much as you might not like it, I think it helps them, the same for horses, they accept it much better.
Hugs, it's never easy.

Thank you Bosworth and Maesfen, you have both confirmed what I thought really but having never been through it before I wasn't sure.

My husband wonders if it's too traumatic for the other dogs and part of me wonders if she wouldn't want them there, but I think you have made the decision easier for me whenever the time comes.

I really hope it dosnt come to this but I think you are being very sensible and preparing for any eventuality.
All my dogs and horses have seen their mates body and have accepted it, I couldnt have coped with them waiting by the door expecting them to come in at any time adding to a already stressful situation. If you do have to have your Rottie pts I hope there is someone there for you because its all to easy to lose yourself in thinking about your other animals and forget about yourself.

Will be thinking of you tomorrow and hope its not what you feared.

I really hope it is not your worst fear, but should you have to make the awful decision to pts I do agree that you should let your others see her. When Buffy was pts last month we didn't have Evie in the room while the vet was there but let her in afterwards. Buffy was in her bed and for all the world looked to be asleep. Evie sniffed her a few times and then seemed to accept it, although there is no doubt she has missed her a lot since, but at least she hasn't been looking for her.:(
Will be thinking of your tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed.
