It did me too until someone told me that the dog was probably no hero but preserving an relatively easy meal
I'd like to think that is not the case and this is more a case of a species naturally trying to preserve its own species

I see the thought in that, however I would not deem that an easy meal dodging such fast moving traffic and risking death its self, hunting animals will not risk injury even in the event of a kill when they are desperate for a catch, otherwise they become victims themselves and unable to hunt when they suffer an injury.
