When dog came to me she had a beautifully clipped coat. Twice I have tried to get her clipped again,. once at home, and this week at the groomers salon. It seems that she is so scared of the clippers, and starts trembling. she is old and sits down a lot too. I have tried the things you do with a scared horse, holding clippers and turning on but not touching, and also running them over her coat not turned on.
Is there something I could buy to shorten the coat without clipping, would a solo type comb work ?

This is Granny Gordon Setter v. Somehow I cant get on the forum again with my current user name and have had to revert to old one. Admin don't seem to be speaking to me !

Ok, guessing she is a Gordon setter? Are you sure she wasn't in fact hand stripped, which would be the most appropriate groom for a Gordon, even pet ones. If she was in fact clipped before, then I'm not sure what to say other than maybe she's had a bad experience somewhere down the line but as you have said you are doing some counter conditioning with her, that's a good start. Up the ante though and make sure the clippers are associated with a really nice treat of something she really likes. The reward is the key!

Mean time, I've never used a solocomb that you would use on a horse (I'm guessing) but having done a quick google I see solo comb does a rake that looks like what I call a coat king (mars used to make those, and there are lots of these in various brands and tooth numbers) which will cut the coat if it's thick enough. It will generally be a more natural finish than clipping. I have used very blunt ones to handstrip gun dogs and terriers (or at least muck out the worst of the bulk). A sharper one will cut more than pull, a blunt one will usually pull from the root rather than cut, which would be my preference.

It was definitely a clip, too short and even to be anything else ! She gets a very woolly browny coat if left and does feel the heat
so maybe that's why she was clipped previously. having said that my previous Gordons years back were all clipped. I will have to see what I can find on t'internet !
