Hi, after some advice, we have 2 rescue malamutes and quite fancy having a go at sledding, is there anyone in the know who knows of any schools in the southwest that we could contact about this.

I wondered why my ears were burning. :p

BSA (http://www.britishsleddogactivities.co.uk/) organise events in the South West. Try the Aistons (Moonfrost) as first point of contact - they are based in Wiltshire, have moots and build great custom rigs.

It's almost the wrong time of year to be starting out, it's Aviemore this weekend and the national champs/euro qualifying event in two weeks' time after which the season comes to a close with only the canicross/bikejor type events continuing in to March and April. At the start of the season in Sept/Oct time you will find working teach-ins designed for newcomers - SHCGB hold one up at Sherwood Pines in Nottingham every year but only cater for KC registered nordic breeds, UCSC held one at Hicks Lodge in Leicestershire last year and I imagine they'll do so again this year.

Thanks black cob, will look into those, at the moment it's more of a day out with the dogs with someone with knowledge and equipment and see if we enjoy it

If you can get to an event to spectate I'd really recommend it - most will have equipment suppliers that help with fitting harnesses etc., offers of help/marshalling are always appreciated and will help you learn the ropes.

Just wanted to warn you that people might not respond very quickly at this time of year or be too busy to help you out for a bit, lots will have been on the road for a week or two for Aviemore and then barely home before the next big run at the other end of the country. Try joining the FB pages of some of the organisers and keeping an eye out for events near you - AMWA, SHCGB, UCSC, BSSF, BSA, Bikejoring UK, Mushers Exchange.
