Dog was on raw diet when I got him, see previous posts. Developed diarrhoea which I think was down to me feeding kidney in probably too large quantity, although he was on apoquell for itching. Took ages to sort but he was back to mostly normal, then about 5 days ago he had another bout which is still on going. Pumpkin etc didn't work. Vet has prescribed metronidazole (sp) as possibly colitis. Also stopped the raw chicken and is on a Hills special gastro diet food
Are the antibiotics usually effective, bit worried as we now have weekend and Bank holiday. Dog seems perfectly fine otherwise.
Getting quite stressed myself about this now.

Assuming the vet has prescribed the correct anti-b for the underlying cause of the colitis (assuming it is bacterial) then after five days I would expect to be seeing some improvement. Did the vet get a faecal sample tested and if so what did the lab cultivate?

I would be careful to ensure that this dog is kept as hydrated as possible as he seems to have been suffering from diarrhoea for quite some time now.

If dog has been on raw and has had a sudden change to a gastro diet with lots of grains then diarrhea seems pretty standard tbh. Fagyl will help but I like to use it alongside CA-37 probiotics and Kaogel to keep hep soothe gut and support the natural flora.

Keep her hydrated - childrens electrolytes are ok.

I would consider sticking to one protein and making it not chicken or beef. If you can find lamb mince that would be ideal. Feed small meals and possibly add a tbsp of live youghurt or kefir once a day to bolster gut flora.

I had an elderly dog doing a similar thing but she lost 2.5kg during repeated episodes (she only weighs 12 normally!) - flagyl, CA-37, Kaogel and switching her to Acana single protein food (Lamb and Apple) worked wonders, she seemed after 15 years to have developed an intolerance to most common animal proteins. She stayed on CA-37 for nearly three months.

What is ca37? My old staffy seems to have no ability to digest dog food anymore and can only not throw up or squit on chicken and rice which I don't think is an ideal diet! Vets have given antib, probiotics, anti sickness meds and next step I believe is steroids??!

Gunnerdog, dog changed to Hills I/d low fat diet on recommendation of vet on Thursday , my dog with pancreatitis is on this.
Dog had large fairly soft poo when on raw diet, never had the hard poo that they are supposed to. I wonder if some of this is stress to due to rehoming, being introduced to another dog, etc. Although dog is quite generally a calm type I have noticed that he seems to scare himself a bit sometimes ! I am starting him on Stormygyl today and got another visit booked in next week if he is not right then.
Since I have had him he has had a very dry warm nose, so wonder if he has had an underlying problem going on. Well I am not a dog expert, have only dealt with what I have encountered with my previous dogs, who mostly have been a robust lot gut wise, present old dog excepted,so I will try and stop worrying! At least he seems happy otherwise, very active etc, eating and drinking.

Flagyl will stop diarrhoea in its tracks...whilst on this med the dog will pick up ,but when you stop,if the problem returns I would
Change diet..change protein source.keep diet simple and bland..avoid treats ,raw hides etc..
Add a probiotic to the diet.
Test for allergies..start with dietary allergens..
Go grain free..
Check worming is up to date.

Child version of kaolin from chemist normally works for me. If raw isn't working, think about Wainwright's trays. Big dog has episodes of puking and he gets nothing but Wainwright's, no treats, nothing, this sorts him out.
