Dog still having pain

Dog with suspected disc or intervertebral (sp)disease still having random pain. There is no rhyme or reason to it, he can be out
and about or messing about indoors - nothing. Is laying down or just stands still and is yelping occasionally. He is back on Tramadol and metacam today and has just yelped again whilst laying down. Very worrying if this level of medication not helping. Had x rays nothing found. Going down the MRIroute now to see if anything shows up but vet has warned me it might not show anything and a CT scan is an alternative, but could need either/or both ! I am on edge the whole time listening out. Dog has no signs of weakness in his limbs. I am hoping it isn't a tumour somewhere. Why do we do it , I took on this dog as first dog getting old and has problems, so a sort of spare ! Thinking of renaming new one Barclay as he is in charge of my bank account. Anyone got any thoughts of what this might be ?

Sorry to keep waffling about this dog but no one to bounce thoughts off at home
 
Sorry Snuffles, no idea what it could be but do understand how terribly worried you must be. I'm so sorry. Hearing a dog yelp is heart wrenching, especially if it's your own. Fingers and toes crossed for you and your boy :( I hope you find the answer soon.
 
I have nothing helpful to add about treatment, but do understand, as our dog has also been ill this week. They grab your heart strings don't they. And your purse strings.

Sounds like he is lucky to be your dog.
 
As I said on your other thread, quality of life for the dog is everything for me. If he is suffering from intermittent pain this strongly he does not have quality of life. I appreciate that it sounds incredibly harsh, but I would PTS for the dogs sake. I had to make the same decision for a whippet with a nose tumour a number of years ago.... 50% of the time she was fine, 50% of the time she was sneezing bloody snot.... I have never regretted my decision

I know this was aimed at Levrier, but tbh if my dog was in sudden severe pain twice a day and the vet couldn't find the problem yes I probably would. How much steady pain is he under that he is stoically enduring? It does sound extreme, but if acute pain can't be diagnosed it is something to bear in mind, particulary on the amount of pain relief he is on.
 
Spine and neck xrayed. Yes he has been generally examined, Vet cant replicate pain on manipulation ! MRI/CT next step, if it proves to be disc related this can hopefully be treated surgically if necessary. If it does prove to be a tumour then that will be another story.
 
You will probably find MRI finds the problem - I wouldn't rush into any major decisions until the mri is done, hope its not going to take too long.
 
How distressing for you. I think pts at this stage would be hasty. Have you been referred to an Orthopaedic specialist? I don't know whereabouts in the country you are but John Ferguson in Fife is excellent. Or you could try Fitzpatricks Referrals down south.

The MRI will hopefully reveal the problem, and I hope it is something easily rectified.

Had a conversation this morning with a lady whose dog had similar symptoms, turned out to be crumbling vertebrae. Dog had op where bones were fused using graft from leg ! Dog back on shoots now. Had to have cage rest for some time Forgot to ask how much it cost, too scared to! Hope MRI spots the problem.
