A week ago now my gorgeous old lurcher Honey, staggered over to me after being fine all day she was very frightened and her eyes were flicking to and fro.
It was really awful to see and as Honey is now 14yrs i was so worried for her . I called my vet who was lovely and told me this is quite common in dogs and is called a dog stroke, its not technically a stroke but a malfunction in the balance receptors in the brain. She told me she would recover and it may take up to 2wks. She has been spot on with the time period, she is still a bit wobbly but is pretty much back to normal.
I was wondering if anyone else has seen/ heard/experienced this and if they have if it re-occured?

Yes our old spaniel had it twice. I honestly thought it was the end the first time it happened. But she recovered totally in the time span the vet predicted. She had another one about a year later, but recovered quickly and totally from that as well.

My old spaniel also had this - he bounced back great even it happened quite a few times.

Sadly he was already 15 and was PTS about a year later from old age.

Basically they have to relearn everything which is why they can be quite uncoordinated afterwards. It can also make them feel quite queasy so if she looks like she is feeling sick and it puts her off her food your vet can give her anti-nausea tablets.

If you need anyone to chat to just PM me

Yes my old collie whos 16 had this just before christmas. Our vet told us it was Vestibular syndrome. It sounds very similar to what your dog has been through.Head tilt, eyes flicking side to side rapidly, unable to co-ordinate himself.going round in circles, not wanting to eat or drink. Our dog had it for about 10 days then recovered but still wobbly. Then he was fine but it did reappear 4 weeks later. But after another course of Anti inflams he has made a ful recovery.Keep an eye on her eyes they are the first givaway that it could be brewing again. Here are the links to my posts when it first happened.

Thank you all for the posts it was very worrying when it happened especially because she has always been so alert. The only reassuring thing was she did know to come to her mum but that makes you feel worse because you cant make it go away!!!
Its good of you all to let me know how it was for you and your dogs. Thanks again x Xx

My old Springer had her first stroke at the age of 14. She recovered quite well but then had a couple more and then we had her pts at home on her blanket and I held her head and whispered sweet nothings. Seems common with oldies of the breed.
