When do people become concerned over a vomiting dog?

Daisy has vomited for three consecutive days. Twice several hours after food, and once an hour after food. She is bright and well within herself, and has not vomited after every meal - but has been sick for three consecutive days.

Do people recommend feeding a small, bland meal - or starving for 12 hours? Or do I now rush to the vets..... ;o

Thanks.

Give the vet you normally use a call, and explain to the receptionist who might be a nurse there, and they will be able to advise what to do next.

I know my fella gets what I call the "hunger pukes" if he eats his food too quickly on an empty belly, so I wouldn't starve her for 12 hours.

Maybe give Daisy some natural yogurt to help her gut along if she will take it.

I would starve for 12 hours then give a bland meal, rice and chicken are suggested by my vet.

I would take the dog to the vet if the dog was 'flat'. If I phone the vet they always say bring her in whatever the problem, I am insured but even so we would live at the vets!

Hope Daisy recovers soon.

If she were mine I would starve for 24 hours then feed a smaller meal - I would have done that after the second time she vomited, but I know hindsight is a wonderful thing! The greyhounds vomit quite often when they bolt their food too fast (unfortunately!) - I suspect she has just irritated her digestive system a bit and it needs to settle. Hope she recovers soon :)

You're absolutely right Levrier, I should have been a bit more on the ball with it. I've opted for a very small amount of bland food tonight and we'll see what happens.

Thanks all for your advice.

Starve 12 hours. My lot puked one after the other, Zak first, 3 days after every meal, then Bear, then Brig. They've done this twice, once after swimming in a very green lake, once after a virus that was going round.

Dogs are very resilient, but when they're sick, it's a huge worry-sick as a dog then fine the next day. Is she drinking? If not, can you syringe some water down her? I figure being sick is for a reason, made me very cross when the vet gave Bear an anti-emetic after he was poisoned. He nearly died. :frown3:

If she's not better in the morning, phone the vet. Try not to worry, they recover remarkably quickly. Think about anything different from the past few days-new environment/food/jabs/different walk.

Please update us tomorrow.

Thanks CT. Yes she's drinking and remains bright, and no sickness since yesterday late morning. But if she is sick again today, then yes I'll follow my own advice and take her to the vets. Absolutely everything remains the same as far as walks and food etc go. The only difference is she may have eaten one or two small sprats that are being run out of the sea by seals at the moment.

That might be it, the salt water can make them vomit. Brig chucks up tripe again immediately.

I think not having thrown up again is an excellent sign and drinking is my measurement of how sick they are, normal drinking tends to mean they're OK. Fingers crossed she carries on up.

So threw up again at about 11.30, so off to the vets we went. No temp, heart rate fine, perhaps a little dehydrated. She's had an anti sickness jab which lasts 24 hours. If she's sick through that, or after it's worn off back to vets for some tests.

No, she wasn't aware of any virus. And was as puzzled as me as to what could be causing it. But Daisy's as bright as a button still. So hopefully it is just a little something that's going around, and the jab will do the trick. Fingers crossed.

I feel your pain. One of my dogs has been off his food for about 8 weeks now. Beginning of October both were unwell with gastroenteritis, but he had been not eating for longer than that. We had already started investigating it with bloods and urine samples and contemplating scopes and scans. Then two weeks ago he was really unwell so vet gave him a cerenia jab which made him vomit immediately - it's supposed to make them stop vomiting.

Scoped, scanned and xrayed and still no further forward. Back in today for more scopes. I'm gutted as he's fading away. And yet still seems bright and happy.

Pucci. Sorry to hear your boy is no better...has he been tested for his spleen?
My friends poodle boy had similar symptoms and he had hemangiosarcoma..
I know our breed can be susceptible to this so its worth investigating.
I hope it's not this and your boy rallies.

Hope they get to the bottom of it soon Pucci :(

Our dog vomits fairly regularly - she has a very sensitive stomach, we tend to starve her for 24 hours then feed either PetID or chicken & rice.
