My Hungarian Viszla has a grass allergy, if he is exposed to grass (in seed) he comes up in lumps, which then scab and come off leaving him patchy/bald in places.
This year he hasn't been as badly affected - I think due to the wet weather.

Does anyone else have a similar problem? Any suggestions.

Last year he was given antihistamines, by the vet, unfortunatley these made little difference, but did make him quite ill in the long run!

Both my staffie bitches have the same problem. I put sudocream onto the actual dried skin, bumps which seems to clear them almost immediately. I now put baby oil on as a preventative and that really helps. No medication for either as this works for them.

I walk a dog with this problem and she has been getting an anti allergy drug from the vet for some time. Took a while to sort it out but she's much better now. Needs proper diagnosis and a skilled vet to make sure they administer the correct dosage. Too much can make things worse too little has no effect. Was a vet school consultant who eventually sorted things out as things were so bad for this dog that there was a question of quality of life!

I would advise getting your vet to blood sample and find out which grasses your dog is allergic too. We send our samples to Axiom laboratories, they can then make an allezyme injection to deal with those specific allergens.

The drug is quite expensive as patient specific but we see great results. The 1st few injections should be done in practice by your vet and then patient waits for about 30mins before leaving to ensure no adverse reaction, then all being well you can either allow your vet to inject (injection intervals frequent in the beginning and then drop to once monthly eventually) or if you and your vet are happy (may vary at different clinics) you may be able to take the vial home and give the injections yourself.

Or maybe referral to dermatologist?

Good luck xx

my dog had a grass allergy, vets were useless, gave me piriton and charged me 4xthe normal price for it because it was in a different jar

number one tip - T SHIRTS!!! :D:D

other than that sensitive dog food might help. otherwise nothing to add to the advice already given.

Likewise with my staffy, really notice it when the grass is dry (not very often just recently!), have also been using sudocream, but thanks for the tip re baby oil, will try that.

I do wonder if it's the seed part that causes the problem, as it's only as the grass has got longer and starting to seed that she gets all the bumps. Yet another reason for the weather to improve so the farmers can get the hay done!!

Our late GSD (bless her) had 48/50 allergies when tested with intradermal tests, including house dust mites, grass, pollen, fleas etc. She was referred to a specialist dermatologist.

We tried the desensitizing vaccines once monthly but to no avail, so she ended up on Atopica (Cyclosporin) - very expensive but worth every penny as it helped her to manage her conditions.

T-shirts - fantastic! Socks for hind paws to stop scratching. We fashioned a pair of trousers for her front legs (she had very bad thickened lesions on her pressure points) with a bra strap sewn on - worked fabulously!

My dog is allergic to everything under the sun! Beech trees, 3 types of grass, wheat, rice, red meats... it's a nightmare!
He is very itchy in summer but he is on 1/4 of a steroid tablet and 1 hayfever tablet a day (both prescribed by vets). He is also on special feed that only contains a certain grain and chicken. He's doing okay now, sometimes a bit itchy but when it's worse we just increase his dosage to maybe 1/2 a tablet instead :)
