Dog with itchy spot on his skin being harassed by my other dog - what can I do?

This is my first post in the dog forum... I have three Yorkshire Terriers, Henry (2), Tilly (neutered, 6) and Jack (neutered, 7). We rescued Tilly and Jack nearly a month ago and they have settled in beautifully; Henry is also much happier to have some friends again since we lost our Bedlington in March.

The problem is that Jack has an itchy patch of skin on his back, approx. the size of a 10p coin, that is quite red. It isn't bothering him too much and we are just keeping an eye on it but Henry is obsessive about it, licking it all the time and probably making it worse. He follows Jack around the house to lick it and literally doesn't leave him alone, apart from when they're out on a walk, sleeping or eating, or when Jack has told him off. Usually Jack is really patient but I don't think it's fair on him for Henry to be doing this all the time, and it isn't helping it to heal either.

So I am just looking for advice really; is there anything I could put on it so that Henry loses interest? Or anything else I could do? This has been going on since Monday.

Thanks, Tash

Other than being bothered by your other dog, to encourage the sore patch (which sounds like a hot spot) to heal; Clip the fur around it, and wash with collodial silver - brilliant stuff! Pat dry, and puff on some athletes foot powder. It should heal very quickly if this is done twice a day.

My samoyed gets hot spots and using this method, they heal within a day or two.

Obviously if you are concerned at all, pop him to your vets!

split them if you can crate one just until the area has heeled that would be beneficial. Have you have the dog with the sore checked by the Vet? If not then I would just to be on the safe side.

This may sound a bit off the wall but you could also put an elizabethan collar on the offending dog when you leave them alone so he physically cant lick his friend. The fact the other dog is so obsessed with it would bother me enough to have it checked by a vet tbh if you havent already.

Thanks for the replies and sorry for my delayed response. We didn't rescue Jack as such as we adopted him directly from his previous owners as they had a baby and didn't think they had enough time/space for the dogs. So his previous owner told me about the skin condition and said it flared up every so often, he'd been to the vet and got a prescribed shampoo (Malaseb) that we now bath him with every week as advised. Of course I'd take him to the vet if he hadn't already been, but the shampoo seems to help.

I have used the athletes foot powder after bathing him and that is keeping it dry; Henry is now in France for a week with my parents so hopefully without him here to lick it, it will heal before Henry gets back. If it doesn't; I have a collar that I can put on Henry.

Thanks again! Tash x

You could always get him his own wardrobe:p as in the little one with the hot spot/skin problem ( a little jumper/t shirt) so the other little one cannot access the area.

He already has a little wardrobe! Silly me didn't think of that before... He is looking better already though so hopefully he will be better in time for Henry's return.
