Rosie spaniel stole my dinner last night (or what was left of it). I had a car crash just before dinner and wasn't overly hungry and left it on the table by accident. It was sweet and sour pork, there was mainly white rice left but half a spoon of sweet & sour too.

Cue coming in this morning to sick and a poo explosion, it was vile. I've not fed her and she seems bright enough, a bit quieter than normal but I think I would be too if I'd been up all night! Will try her with some rice chicken type food later tonight but is there anything else I can do? She hasn't had any runs now since about half 7 when I put her out so I think it's all out of her system. Not sure whether to ring the vet and ask for some of that pro-kolin probiotic? I had a tube of it but have run out...

Starve for 24 hrs but make sure she has water. Then introduce small meals of chicken and rice.If you become worried about her at anytime ring vets for advice. Hope she gets better soon.

Agree with Emily55, having spoken to vets, starving is not a good idea as if there's a nasty bug in their gut it can fester. I would feed a light diet like chicken and rice and little and often to avoid overloading her tummy. If she seems fine in herself, just a bit subdued, I'd keep an eye on her. If she has anymore vomiting and diarrhoea and becomes really lethargic I'd pop her straight down to the vets.

I have dealt with a lot of dogs with these problems and most vets will advise (if the diarrhoea is very watery and severe) to starve for 24 hrs and monitor (provided that the dog is drinking and taking fluids - if not - vet). Once the diarrhoea has eased, plain and simple Chappie! Chicken and rice is ok too, but cheap and cheerful chappie is the best way! It's what they give to all of the neglected starving dogs which have stomach upsets on being fed so it's highly recommended. Other option of course is to get some sensitivity diet from the vets, but at this stage you would be forking out one hell of a lot of money when you could possibly solve the problem with cheap Chappie! Good luck!

For non infectious diarrhoea try "tree barks powder" from dorwest herbs. You can either sprinkle it on normal food or mix it with water to make a paste and feed it "au naturel"
For dogs with a sensitive stomach I keep a tub in my cupbaord, can even be fed to puppies

Thanks everyone. I think it was simply the sweet and sour not agreeing with her tummy rather than a bug. We starved her Wed then yesterday she had 2 meals of chicken and rice which she demolished at a rate of knots, and again this morning. Drinking fine but is quite clingy at the moment so probs still not feeling 100%, but a lot better than she was and as far as I know no more diarrhoea and def no more vomiting :)
