Our lovely black lab seems to have developed a problem, and your experience/ advice would be greatly appreciated.

Fern is 18 months old now and is a working dog (been out on 3 shoots to introduce her). When we let her out of her pen she sometimes yelps, as if you have trodden on her paw type yelp, it lasts 2 seconds then is fine and legs it round the garden. We thought at this point she was excited to see us. OH took her on a shoot end of November. When she got home she was in obvious pain and was extending her neck and sticking her tounge out. We rushed her to vet who did a full examination and couldn't find anything obvious. Gave her pain killers etc and she was fine. OH did mention that she had yelped a coupe of time during the afternoon but seemed fine. Again yelps last couple of seconds. Vet did say she thought she has limited movement of her head to the left and she wouldn't let her extend her back right leg.

Christmas day another yelp for 2 seconds then fine. Just before xmas we sent her in for xrays of neck, spine, hips and all was clear. We have asked for the xrays to be reffered to Cambs vet school for second opinion and are currently waiting to hear.

Could it be related to her micro chip as they made a mess of putting it in. It went between her shoulders and bled alot?

She is currently being kept quiet on hers walks and is fine apart from this random yelp.

Help!!

Were the shoulder, neck, elbows all covered by x-ray? Have they queried her elbows?

Might be a deep tissue thing, if the x-rays are clear? You could look into accupuncture, physio, chiro, under vet's guidance?

A friend's dog had lameness that he never got to the bottom off, she would be hopping lame and screaming one minute and fine after a few minutes, he tried everything but he sadly had to let her go as she was intended to be a worker and obviously pulling up lame in the middle of a criminal pursuit or similar would not be ideal.

Thank you for your reply.

As far as I know it was just neck, spine and hips. Our vet said that cambs vet school might think she is a good candidate for an MRI or where they inject die into spine (not sure whats its called), we will have to wait and see. Physio has been mentioned but we obviously need to find out where the pain is. It is really strange as it is not everyday, can be once a week if that, and in no particular circumstance. Even when she yelps she is completly sound, it seems as tho she has spams in her neck area? Looking at her at the min in front of the fire, she hasn't a care in the world!!

i know it maybe a long shot but she hasnt got an ear infection or something in her ear has she?? our old dog used to do a random yelp not overly often and he would be reluctant to bend his head and lift it up and it turned out he had a grass seed stuck right down his ear.
Failing that agree to have elbows x rayed- my newfy was fine then one day let out a huge blood curdling cry went on 3 legs then 2 seconds later was fine, we rushed her to vets anyway turned out she had a problem with her elbow basically small fragment of bone was loose in the joint this wasnt detected until she went to liverpool and they did all sorts of scans etc to find the problem she had it cleaned out and was fine afterwards until now anyway but thats not form her elbow!!
I would push to have her referred to the uni vets they are much better (but most normal vets dont particularly like referring you unless you push we have found anyway) must be an ego thing! A CT/MRI would be my choice of diagnostics personally depending whether they are thinking bone/soft tissue. Good luck

Thank you Dizzydancer,

She had her ears checked and they were ok. I will mention the elbow to the vets. We are hoping cambs vet school has picked something up on xrays, nothing worse than not knowing!!

i know that feeling! I am currently going through that with the newfy- since sept she is lame on back leg (hock) somedays she is 9/10ths lame others 1/10th lame.
We have no idea what is going on and its killing us as we need an answer either way! It has been biopsied twice for cancer going back for number 3 all coming clear. CT showed nothing, she has an infection but doesnt seem to be awful enough to cause the lameness. It is soo annoying think MRI is possibly next step failing that once infection clear try to fuse it as joint incredibly unstable!!
