My little girl, Pippa, (8 year old Jrt) has gone into the vets this morning to have a dental.
We noticed just before christmas that one back tooth was very scaled - she wont let us clean her teeth, but will let us 'crack' any buildup off - and that her gum was inflamed. We took her to the vet then, who advised that it wasnt too bad, but she would need a dental at some point this year.
We planned to take her in the new year to have her teeth done, but then I got my date for my op, and January flew by getting everything sorted for my being a useless lump for several weeks!
For the last week Pippa has been showing signs of discomfort, has been eating grass, and not chewing her food (dry) properly and then throwing up, so we got her booked in for her dental this morning.

The vet who booked her in said that they didnt look too bad as a whole, but she doesnt know if the back tooth will have to come out until Pips is asleep. Im just being a worried mummy and looking for some 'ahh, there there, she will be fine' things really! lol!

Also, She has dry food (with a little water to mix her joint powder), she has a charcoal bone every day, and has one of those denture rask thingys once or twice a week, but still gets a lot of buildup on her teeth. Whereas my friends 2 dog have the same diet and are older, but have the beautiful pearly white teeth....how??!!

Anyway, roll on 2pm! x

It might just be her genetics. Hope all goes well later.

My young dog is on raw and gets a bone a day (proper one from the butcher, not a dental rask or a cooked gravy bone from the pet shop! These ones are as natural as they come and free!), I don't know whether it is because he is black and they stand out more :p but people actually remark on them, even strangers :o

You could just try a bone every so often rather than going the whole hog, my older dog cannot tolerate raw per se but he has no problem chowing down on a big bone and his sister like yours used to puke everything straight back up again too :p

my dog Betty had a lower molar out last year- she had cracked it and sheared half off! (although i only knew this as it looked brown and i could see it when she yawned! stupid bulldogs feel no pain....!)

the evening of her op, she had been spayed at the same time, i only gave her a little wet food, and soaked her dry in hot water to soften it, as she was still recovering from the anesthetic. she was fine to eat her normal dry food after that, although i always add in wet food/sardines, water and apple cider vinegar to moisten it.

the day of the op she did have some bloody saliva, so dont be alarmed by that if she gets the tooth removed. the mouth heals very quickly. ;)

anyway, she was fine the day after having it out and its never stopped her eating dry/bones.

with regards teeth cleaning Betty gets a raw bone ever so often, and likes rawhide chews. these seem to do the trick.

My 18 month old spaniel just had 2 teeth removed at the vets after he ran into a tree with a stick in his mouth at full pelt and broke them. I had no idea his teeth were in the state they were until on fell out on the floor. So he lost 3 premolars in total. Dont worry if she has to have a tooth removed as the mouth heals exceptionally well. The next day my boy was right as rain.

Sorry I cant shed much light on the cleaning on the teeth etc as I do brush his teeth and he gets bones occasionally.

Thanks all :) Mum and OH have just gone to collect Pips, so she can snuggle in bed with me!
Thanks for advice on feeding etc, I might try her with a raw bone when she has healed up :) x

Shes home :) Very groggy, and a bit confused as to what the hell has happened to her mouth, but happy to be home and now nice and snug in bed with me :D
Poor girl has had to have 3 teeth out in total, both top and bottom last molars on the left, and the top last molar on the right, so she is going to feel a bit strange for a few days!
She refused food and water at the vets, but had a reluctant lap at home, and then begged for a cup of tea (no sugar :p ) and had a nice drink of that! haha!
I know we really shouldnt give her tea, but its decaf, no sugar and pretty milky, and she only has a couple of spoonsful - need an embarressed smiley here!!
Just so glad to have my girl home! x

Thanks cinnamontoast :)
Thats actually what made her throw up the 1st time! Told you she was spechul!! lol!

She was pretty wingey and fed up last night and this morning, but seems much more her old self this afterrnoon! I was getting quite worried about her! xx
