Doggy Hayfever? Piriton?

Small terrier has been sneezing a LOT the past few days, worse after walking, he also appears to have itchy eyes, not conjunctivitis gunky but watery, slightly pink and he’s rubbing them.

I was thinking of trying him on half a Piriton (he was last weighed at 10kg, he’s also on a diet!) before taking him to the vets.

Will I go to do owning hell forever for trying Piriton before the vets? I was going to try it until Friday and if no improvement take him to the vets Friday evening

He’s well in himself apart from the hayfever type symptoms.
 
Nope. Dex has a piriton a day (hes 30kg) from May till about July, usually sorts his hayfever (dogs with hayfever just daft!!!). He was really bad this year and vet advised doubling the dose....... which I did, and was back at the vets 3 days later for steroids, because i really thought he was going to remove his eyes with his dew claws- VOM!!
 
Thanks, have bought some at lunch time so if OH is around to supervise this evening I'll try him on half a tablet.

Had a look online, I'm going to make OH try them too for his hayfever, if I get them both on Piriton I can bulk buy!
 
Well, he had one last night, but he was so tired from a day at work with OH he just slept (so tried I managed to get not only in the front door but also down the hall before we woke up).

He's sneezy again this morning but I haven't given him another. Going to take him on the same walk we did on Tuesday this evening and give him half a tablet before we go and see if that's any better.

He was also very pleased to be fed a chunk of cheese with the tablet in!
 
I'm not sure if my vet has got the dose wrong but he's recommended x2 piriton tablets x2 a day? If it makes a difference it isn't specifically for hayfever but general itchiness (mild atopy/atopic dermatitis)
 
Give a whole tablet and if it's piriton give one morning and evening. You can give more if needed but I wouldn't give more than that without vet advice.

It's worked with my collie better than anything else.

Just as an aside, all my dogs will eat any tablet like a treat...we taught them to and it makes life so much easier. See if he'll just eat the tablet. :)

a side effect of piriton is drowsiness, sometimes vets give it to stressy agitated dogs to try and calm them down a bit-if your dog is consistently quiet on them I would stop giving them though, they made my daughter constantly feel like she had cotton wool in her head (her discription at 10yrs old), gave her a constant headache, dizzyness and nausea. It is the only antihistamine you can give to dogs though.
