Sorry I do apologise for this topic but I have a Scottie x westie 6year old I have brother and sister.

Anyway brother has a rather discusting habit .. He will express his anal glands all over you .. If he's sitting next to you .. Or if your shoes/slippers on the floor hel lay on them and express on them as well.

Even worse when my auntie and uncle comes over he gets all excited to see them they invite him to sit on there lap and enjoying a fuss and then bam .. Hel express on them!!

Any idea why he does it?

Look at his diet, maybe add bran. One of mine has this issue. I took him to the vet who taught me how to express them myself, charming but lovely for the dog and much better for my furniture. :) The bran has helped enormously, so do try that.

Some dog's just have glands that block and worse, sometimes get infected. It's best to check (pretty obvious when you know where they are-about 5 and 7 o'clock around the anus. If they're obvious, they're full and need expressing, but I would ask your vet or groomer to show you how to do it if you're at all unsure.

Ohh that's interesting! He currently has chappie chicken the biscuit dry food so will look into the ingredients more and try the bran

I mentioned on another thread that Chappie dry is very poor, contains carcinogens. The tinned stuffs fab for upset tummies. Have a look on the other food threads in here for the petforums link on food. Red is awful, green is good. The higher quality food may initially be more expensive but you'll probably feed less of a higher quality food so it can work out roughly similar to feeding lots of low quality stuff.

Sorry, don't mean to hi-jack but just wanted to say that your groomer is technically and legally not allowed to do anal glands. An owner certainly can do them on their own dog, but groomers must not do them. This is considered a minor medical procedure which requires a diagnosis which groomers are not allowed to make.

My grooming teacher showed me how to empty them - I done a year of training to groom but all the time he's in the bath I check and they never need emptying, probably because he always expresses them on people

And yet it's commonly offered at several groomers round my way.

:-( for some reason my posts are slow when I post on here :-( the chappie chicken is the only thing that doesn't upset his stomach, other food that I've tried gives him runny belly. Just out of interest What food are your dogs on cinnamontoast? Maybe I should try something else but he seems to be doing well on this.

My grooming teacher taught me how to do anal glands .. It was a waste of a year really because I've not taken it up only thing that's come in handy is doing my own dogs lol! But when I start my new job I won't really have the time to groom him so hel go to my very good friend who's a groomer .. The time I spend grooming him is less time him having a run so he can go to my friend while I'm at work lol!

My lot are on raw. I'm a bit evangelical about it after researching what was in the commercial food I had given,y dog that died of stomach and spinal cancer. The less processed the better, IMO.

Yes, I know! It is around my way too - and all across the country in fact. However, it IS illegal for a groomer to do. So is tooth scaling, doing any sort of massage therapy etc.

I just wrote a massive article for Total Grooming Magazine and had to reasearch all this for it and contacted RCVS and insurance companies to get all the facts verified.

Gypsy girl, why did you not take up grooming after your training? Just curious!

Back to the topic of foods - I've found that feeding chappie gives my dog a far too soft a bowel movement and it sticks to his bum. I'm not a chappie fan, but unfortunately the sod is not the best eater in the world, and won't eat enough unless he's got some sort of tinned crap to disguise whatever else he's eating. It's only about a spoonful a day he gets, but it's enough to do weird things to his tum.

I would try raw, but between having the bones about my house and on my poodle's coat, and also the fact that I feel rather concerned that my boys would fight over them, I'm reluctant to try.

There's no reason why dogs should fight more over food because it's raw. If its very icky with blood, it sometimes gets on their paws, but otherwise it just gets hoovered up like normal food.

Another one who feeds raw meat and bones, never have problems with anal glands (the dogs not me!)
The bones make them very firm (normal and good) so the anal glands are automatically squeezed and emptied a bit each time they go leaving none or very little left to dump on a unsuspecting human!
Oz :)

PucciNPoni: I wasn't very confident in myself when doing other cuts .. Fine with a lot of breeds but didn't feel confident doing it on my own and groomers arnt really taking people on in the parlours.. The plan was for me to work from home but instead im still a HCA in our local hospital and will be a MCA up on maternity in a couple of months so I'll still be in the hospital!

Yet I've had big issues with one of mine (on raw) yet no issues with the other two.

groomers arnt really taking people on in the parlours.

Don't think that's true, a friend of mine was just taken on at the dog groomers on the yard.

YOu should check out Pets@Home website as they're hiring like mad - opening loads of new stores with grooming rooms in them. They'll be staffed by more than one person as well (ie a grooming manager).

Cinnamonontoast: our local pets at home had 1 position going which was only a temporary 6month position and I needed something permanent, other shops are ones like doggy fashion down here and there's 2 other parlours in my area the rest of the groomers all work from home. I'm in Brighton south east so when there's a job going here you have 100s that go for the 1 position. I work with my friend at her house when she gets busy and when I'm not working so I do groom a little bit but it's hard with time etc. You never know when I get my own house I might be able to have a little room or something to groom in but as I'm only 20 I'm working full time to save for a deposit for a house with my bf, so maybe in the future I'll be able to get back into it but for time being I want to work a lot and bring in as much money as I can so I can get a mortgage for a house lol
